i have 2 compaq desktops that need help. im on a serious budget as i am unemployed, but have no choice as to fix these as the kids need them. these are not anything but web/homework systems, we dont game or watch movies on these.
1st pc is a sr1610nx, the pc operates but has mobo issues. there is a chip/processor on it that fried/burnt and needs replaced/upraded. from what i can tell is that it will be an upgrade as it is hard to find a replacement mobo for these(MS-7184). what would be the best way to get this going good again. what mobo/cpu with integrated video would work. looks as my ps is only 250w, so that would probly need upgraded as well. and i understand i would need new ram as well with a new board, this thing only had 256mb ddr400. i plan on keeping the hdd and cdrom drive and case. what will work??

the other is a 2027x. it crapped on the kids the other day. i know the hdd is good and cd/dvd drive along with my ram are good. this pc lost all visual graphics, monitor says no signal? basically looking at mobo and cpu ugrade with video/graphics card, just like the other i need it integrated or other cheap solution. here were the specs

if there is a cheap mobo/cpu combo that would work in these, please point me in the direction i need to go. i also thought barbones pc, but not sure what all they come with and what i could tranfer over. seems like different companys have different interpretations of what a barebones is.

You have to use the exact model of motherboard when you replace it, or the OEM copy of windows won't work.

I don't know if it has to be the exact OEM motherboard, or if it just has to be the same basic model. Can someone answer that?

The first one, the sr1610nx, has an MSI MS-7184

The second one, the SR2027x, has an ASUS A8M2N-LA

To look for a replacement, put one of those models into google shopping or ebay, and include "compaq" in the search somewhere

Sounds like an old PC - not sure if it's worth replacing the mobo for that. My 5 year old MOBO was selling for 100 bucks online - and I'd be left with a slow P.O.S.

If you have limited needs - you have a CD or DVD drive - with a HDD - you might slap some parts old and new together with a student verison of Win 7 for $30 bucks.

Link to Student Discount Win 7 You will need a .edu email account in order to get this. ( You may need a DVD burner to burn an ISO onto Disk as an install disk - but I don't know how they deliver the student discount verison. )

Athlon II x2 2.8 Ghz - AM3 + ASUS MOBO M4A785-M - $111.98

2x1GB DDR@ 533 Ram - @47.00 Shipped

Basic Case $30.00

Hook up your old Keyboard, Hard Drives, CD / DVD drive and you should be good to go.

Around 200 bucks have a decent General User PC that has a pretty sweet video card onboard - for HD graphics if you need em - but not for gaming.

+1 on the windows 7 student, if you can get it then its a good deal.

Although you can get this combo http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.328134 for $92+shipping.

Nice deal - where did you find that one? He'd still need a heatsink for that CPU. It's an OEM model.

I'd rather have ASUS or Gigabyte over ASRocks too -but that's just me.

Edit : I wasnt' sure if Win 7 can run on 2GB or Ram or not. If it can't - somebody should let the OP know.

Newegg has a new section under computer hardware called "DIY PC combos" check it out.

I would also rather have ASUS or Gigabyte, but there is nothing wrong with ASRock they have been pretty good from the ones I have done builds with.

Win 7 will run on a netbook with 1gb of RAM with no problem. Win 7 was designed to be lite and run on older and slower machines.
