Help me with OS decision

Alright. I've heard it go back and forth between different operating systems, but I still am undecided about which OS to go with. Is there an OS out there that will be compatible with just about anything and is safe and stable? Also I'm a gamer so i dunno how that plays into the OS. Any suggestions?

Linux for styabibily, Winodws for comptibility, thats my oppinoin.

If your a gaming i would choose windows, and 1, set-up a firewall, 2 don't use any P2P program like kazza, limewire, bearshare, soulseek, Even if you think it dosn;t have any spyware, 1 it prabally dose, 2 allot of the stuff you download are infected files.

Just a good anitvirus and spyware program, dont look at porn or other untrusthworthy websites, that hsould keep you clear of anything nasty on your PC.

Windows XP professional(or home) I would sugest for you with what I said.

Yeah, I'd go with XP home or pro. Doesn't really matter which one, just depends on if you want to spend the extra $30-40 for some more features.
I wouldn't go as far as to say don't use any P2P. If you're careful, you shouldn't have a problem with it.

I've used P2P nets for several years now, and I've not gotten a single virus (although, to be fair, most of what I download are copies of the D&D/VTM manuals that I have but am too lazy to just scan in myself). I don't know how it measures up security-wise, but 2000 is a more minimalistic OS than XP, and won't require as much RAM or CPU attention to run as XP will. If you do decide to go with XP, then I don't recommend XP Home. Nearly every time a friend asks me to help them with their computer that they're having issues with, I get there only to find out it's running XP Home. Professional is also much more advanced-user friendly OS, and I believe that the security is also better on Pro than on Home.

XP Pro is the best bet for what you want to do! I am a Linux man but there is little or no games for it.

Since your gaming - don't even take Linux into consideration - Pro has some good features that makes it better than home, and I do believe as well that it is more safe, as Neuromancer said. Even though win2k requires less memory consumption and less CPU attention, it's not as stable. There's a reason win2k has 4 service packs out.

xp home will be enough for your need, but there is nothing to say this has to be an exclusive descission. You can have xp and linux, or infact any combination of os you like

Linux still supports some games, you just have to find out which.

I'd ru na dual boot, partition your drive for Linux AND Windows XP. If you are working on something inportant or just general use and don't want your PC to flip out boot with Linux. If you are going to a LAN or you are planning on using an application for a long time that won't run in Linux, boot with Windows XP Pro.

I don't have any exclusive "Windows" programs that i absolutely HAVE to use everyday, so I am probably just going to go Linux 100%. If i can't get a game to run, then i'll do without, I shouldn't be sitting in my room playing games anyways i need a job.

You can get both, and when you start up your'll have the decision to choose, and whenever your going to play a game choose windows or anything else choose linux.

UT2004 runs on linux, personally, i dont like linux.

I tried linux for 2 days and it was bloody awful, couldnt get my head around any of it. All the other way round to windows. Anyway, back to topic. If you want stability and compatibility i woudl actually have to say Win 98. I know its dated but think about it, almost everything (and i really mean everything), is still compatible with 98. And its stable because its so tiny and compact that there is hardly anything to go wrong.

I agree with that absolutely, linux is NOT a gaming OS, only in the fact that its bloody stable and would never EVER crash on you. (Unless you do something to it which forces it to).

I've used P2P nets for several years now, and I've not gotten a single virus

Hmmmm, yes. It really depends on what your downloading. But still, if you've got a decent firewall and antivirus/spyware/adware programs then you neednt worry about what you download. Just make sure you "clean up" afterwards.

Linux for styabibily, Winodws for comptibility, thats my oppinoin.

In a nutshell....... yes...... But what version of windows........???

I don't get why people say Linux isn't for gaming. Whenever i go to LAN's, our dedicated server's and main rig's are ALWAYS run off Linux. When i played Counter Strike, the servers that ran on Linux were always the best, there was actuall a filter for "linux only servers" lol.

Personally, if the game doesn't support Linux, what were the peoople who made it thinking??? Gaming with Windows is a joke, so many problems, Linux seems to be the ideal gaming OS if only games would take advantage of it. Like already said, when you do find a game that works on Linux, gaming is smooth and it's next to impossible to maek hte OS crash your PC in a game when running Linux.

The servers are probably linux because they are so dman reliable. The game isnt actually being played on the linux server, just hosted there. I bet a vast majority of actual users at the LAn where running a windows OS whether that be 98/2k/or a version of XP.

yup, and it's always a pain to connect with other Windwos users at a LAN, problems left anr igth. i'm only thinking that game developers should make games for Linux as well...it makes so much more sense and they will sell more because dedicated Linux users are jsut itching for games.

If you all have XP its easy just conect them and it automaticly configs, at least it dose for me for lans.

I'm pretty sure dragin is right too, the server is run of linux but the game isn't.

always had trouble with XP lans. why? because everyone has tweaked XP different way cuz it sucks so much. i have disabled services, modified registries, downloaded different apps that will make XP faster or w/e...so when u get 10 people with all different types of Windows XP...you run into problems.

i need maybe 10% of the default running service in XP, other people need more. don't try disabling them with Home though, everyime i did it with home, all services would stop working and i'd have to re-register Windows XP at bot up. so annoying. Pro is much more user friendly.

Well, microsoft are never EVER going to make directX compatible with Linux for obvious reasons, so the ball is in Linux's court for them to adjust to comply with directX. Not sure if it can even be done!!
