Help! Multiple laptop problems! Can't update windows, AVG, Adaware, etc.!!

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but your logs now appear to be clean. How is your system running at the moment?

I can see that you don't have much disk space available, and a fairly small hard drive to begin with.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

This will clear out your temporary files, and hopefully free up some space there.

I suggest you look through the Add or Remove Programs list for any programs that you no longer use, particularly larger programs such as games. If you are not sure what a program is, please ask.

Also, Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it:
    javaicon.gif

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Right all that has definitely seemed to help, thanks very much! :)
However, I'm still having a few problems. AVG and AVG Anti-Spyware still refuse to update, and despite changing the boot order, my computer will not always load up if i have a USB attached - I just get a consistent-level humming and a black screen. But the computer is generally working a lot quicker, so thanks!

Glad that's helped. With regards to AVG, I'd first try uninstalling both programs and installing the new version 8.0 Free Edition from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

With regards to booting with a USB drive attached, this may be a hardware issue. Does the system POST at all with the drive attached? Does this happend with all USB drives? Clearing the CMOS might help.

Ok, will download the latest version :) There are only two usb ports in my laptop, but i have the same problem with both. One I use for my external hard drive, the other for my UBS hub. How exactly do you clear the CMOS and what do you mean by POST? Hehe, i'm sorry, i'm relatively novice when it comes to anything other than common sense stuff!
Cheers

The easiest way on a laptop is to get into the BIOS (usually pressing Del as the computer starts up, but sometimes another key such as F1 - the screen should say press a certain key to enter setup). There's usually an option such as 'load optimised defaults'.

By POST, I mean the first screen that comes up when the system turns on, usually displaying either the manufacturers logo or a screen showing the detection of memory, drives, etc... Basically, does anything come on the screen at all.
