does it take much less time when you use the power button? i had a similar problem a while ago, i found that cutting down on the background processes seem to do the trick.... also you might have a program hang in the background while shutting down

i thought that but i hit alt ctrl del and look at the processes and nothing was there except the stuff that was soposed to be

there is no straight answer for this problem, ive had a look on google and the possible causes include viruses, spyware, bad drivers, services settings, page file options, hardware incompatability and network settings.
the first thing i would definately do would be to perform a virus scan and then reinstall drivers if no viruses are found.

if you have antiviruses and antispywares .. run them.. and i would recommend a registry defrag and registry optimizer that cleans your registry. and if you haven't defraged your computer.. it'll be good to do so..

what are your computers specifications?

ive run anti virus and stuff but i havent defraged it

and i dont know the specfications its my brothers com and we got it from gateway 3-4 years ago so

i read a post about a month ago about this same problem. there were directions for a registry edit that should help out a lot with this problem. Search for it cuz i don't want to. i just know it exists on this site.

hmmmmmm! Mine takes 50 seconds to shut it down. I guess you can try to reformat your computer and take out the virus or defragment it as the guy recomend too.

Are you clearing out the pagefile upon shutdown? That will add significant amounts of time to the shutdown process :)
