Help! My internet monitor says I'm downloading...

Hi, I've just upgraded my internet to a higher speed, but unfortunately it also comes with a bandwidth limitation as to how much I can download in a month. This isn't a big deal considering I don't often download huge files, but I do tend to download TV series, so I don't want to have to worry about it.

However, I have started monitoring my bandwidth usage, and an annoying problem came to my attention. I am always downloading at around 10kb/s. I've come to the conclusion that Windows or some other program is automatically downloading something, but I can't figure out what it is. Since 10kb/s equates to around 25 gb per month if I leave my computer on all the time, and that is half of my monthly allowance, I really want to fix this problem.

Does anyone have any info on why this happens, or what processes are connected to the internet constantly? Intensive internet searching yielded no results.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. - I'm using Windows 7 x64 Pro.

Every computer when connected to the internet has some information moving back and forth. Whether it be Windows update, media player, IE, Antivirus

I guess you should see what ports are using your internet. If you can determinate which port eats your internet so just try to figure our why it happens.

I agree with G25r8cer.A program is probably updating,or if you`re on the internet then it`s probably ads.Some programs update in the background without you knowing.

10KBps is pretty high, are you sure it's not 10Kbps, and are you sure it's internet traffic and not local network data? If you don't leave your computer on 24/7 then it shouldn't be an issue. But as others have said, chances are its because other programs are checking for updates. Is it always at 10KBps or did you only check it a few times?

10KBps = Kilobytes per second
10Kbps = Kilobits per second

If it's kilobits per second, divide it by 8 to get kilobytes per second. Your ISP bandwidth cap would be in bytes, not bits.

oh lol i thought they were the same.:o

Thanks for the input! I am downloading at 10 KB/s, not Kb. How do I determine which ports are using my internet? I am currently using NetWorx to monitor my usage. The antivirus (Avira) is not using my internet except during scheduled updates.

Hey guys, found the solution: the network speed monitor that I have in my sidebar doesn't have many options, but when I dug a little deeper into the NetWorx monitor I found and option to ignore local traffic, and that did it. Seems there is 10KB/s local traffic, and though it annoys me a little to not know what it is, it's definitely not as big a deal.

Thanks for all the input!

if you're on msn, ever message received gets accounted for that, opening windows, downloading videos, downloading pages, it's normal.
