HELP: My laptop is black even though its on.

I have a compaq presario CQ40.
Just today when i turn on my laptop, I can hear the fan spinning, but my laptop screen is still black. I tried holding down the power button for 30 secs and pressing all the select buttons but o no avail.
 
Do you hear any sounds from Windows when it starts up? Does it push video to an external monitor?
