I hope you guys can help because I am getting very frustrated with my router.

I bought the router about a month ago, and I plugged it in and set it up, and everything worked fine until I decided to disconnect it because I wasnt using the wireless and I was only using one computer that I connected directly to the modem. So anyways, when I decided I wanted to use the wireless, I plug the router back in, and it wont connect to the internet. I tried reseting it, and setting it back up, but it says my computer doesnt recognize it or something. Its funny because I can connect to web pages about half the time with the router plugged in, but most of the pages say unable to connect. Please bear in mind that I have very little knowledge about what to do, so any and all suggestions are welcome. And if you need any more information, Ill be happy to provide it if possible.

Thanks so much for any help!

PS, Do you think it is possible that the router is dead? if so, how can I verify that?

wireless is disabled by default. if you reset the router you will need to relogin using the factory login and enable it and set the security again.

Ok, thanks, sorry, but how do you do that? Also, idk if this matters, but the computer in question is connected by cables to the router.

what kinda of ISP do you have Cavle or DSL ?
what kind of router ?

first shut dont everything modem, router and computers.

turn on modem wait till it boots ( about 2 min )
turn on router wait till it boots ( about 2 min )
turn on PC ... what happens ?

I have cable for ISP and the router is Motorola sb4200 SURFboard.

Ive tried shutting everything down, and rebooting, but nothing happened. Ill try again now and edit this post if anything changes.

EDIT: The same thing is still basically happening. i have this Linsys easylink advisor thingy, that when i boot the computer, it recognizes everything, but it says it has no internet connectivity, but I can repair it, then i can access some of the internet. IE: after the connection is repaired, the advisor says the network is OK, but when i open the internet, my homepage wont load, but when I go to another location, it will load, then if I go to another one, it wont load, but after a couple refreshes it will. But then after about five minutes, the connection goes down again, and it says that I cant repair it. Also, when I choose to add another computer to the netowork, the advisor thing says that the computer does not recognize the router. I have no idea what to do...

with the router attached to the modem connect one PC to the router with a
Patch cord ( cat5 ethernet cable )
In windows run box enter ncpa.cpl and hit enter, right click your internet connection and click properties, scroll down to tcp/ip highlight it and click properties, verify its set to obtain IP automaticly

in IE address bar enter 192.168.1.1 and hit enter
in the login box enter admin for the user name and admin for the PW
verify on the setup page under internet connection options is set to obtain address automaticly.
verify that wireless is enabled.

now you will need to change the router PW on the administation page to keep others out of your router.

once this is done you should be able to connect.

ok, I did all that deepblue told me to, but I couldnt find where to select obtain address automatically in the router setup, but I figured that maybe the DHCP thing was that. What happens is that the internet works just fine for about five minutes, but then it just stops working. When I went into the easylink advisor thing, and looked at the advanced settings of the router, it said that it was looking for firmware version, wireless stuff, and other things. They were there for a while where it only said obtaining... then they just disappear

Here are the things the router could not obtain...

firmware version
SSID
wireless mode
WAN IP address
connection type

It did obtain...
LAN IP
MAC address

And to say again, the internet works perfectly for like five minutes, where after that time, it just stops working alltogether...

This seems to be a pretty common problem on the linksys forums, so hopefully there is a solution somewhere. And btw, thanks a bunch for the help!

i never had this issue with any of my linksys routers, I have never used the easylink stuff I set my networks up manually.

if your using wireless you may try change the frequency of your router you may be getting Interference for cordless phones and such .
i would update my wireless card drivers and disable any WEP or WPA and give it a shot make sure your router is not to near any metal,

Well, my issue isnt the wireless connection, its the wired one. the computer that is connected by a wire is the one with the problem, I havent even tried the wireless computer yet...
