I came back from college I found my computer on the screen where it lets you chose to start in safe mode or normal mode.
I chose normal mode... it gets to the Windows XP loading and then restarts the PC... tried 5 times and same result....

I decided to start in safe mode this time.... 1,2,3,4,5 times ... still restarts !!!
I put my antivirus CD and boot and did a scan ... nothing came out !!!

Now I'm talking from a Live Linux CD.... I try to read files from my HDD... it won't let me read it....

do you have a windows xp cd handy?

The reason it won't let you see your HD is that it is not mounted, you can try mounting it manually by using the mount command (see man for details with that distro) and mount it. Once mounted you may be able to access the files. I suspect some possible file system corruption if its not mounting. Also, NTFS local support in Linux is iffy and runs unstable.

If you have an xp cd I can suggest some recovery console commands that may fix your problem.

Well, I will just assume you have a copy of a windows xp cd lying around that you can boot off of. So here is what you can try to do. Boot off the windows xp cd and choose the recovery console, choose your installation and log in as administrator, then do the follow code

Code:
cd ..
attrib -h c:\boot.ini
attrib -s c:\boot.ini
attrib -r c:\boot.ini

del c:\boot.ini

bootcfg /rebuild (follow the instructions, if not sure just name it windows xp and use the defaults) under the options you want /fastdetect /noexecute=optin

chkdsk /r

fixboot (hit yes to rebuild boot sector)

I have used this method to fix things like software corruption in the past at work and it does work well but I can't guarantee it 100%. Also, with anything you do you always run the risk of losing data, so please make sure you are aware of that.

Thanks for your help, I already tried the recovery console but forgot to mention that, I just tried the chkdsk and fixboot commands with no luck
I will try your commands and get back to you.

ah see the /r tag is key. regular old chkdsk is actually quite worthless haha, the /r does a deeper scan and tries to repair any kind of software damage it finds.

Is there any possibility of losing data with this command ? or actually making the partitions not accessible?

Yes I've read that :) I was asking about the other command
Anyway i tried and it didnt work.
I connected my HDD to my friends laptop and I'm backing up my data, looks like I'm formatting.

if you type in chkdsk /? in the command line you will get all the switches and descriptions you can use.

the /r stands for repair, so it scans your HD and tries to repair it. It sounds like your corruption is too bad to repair though, or maybe you have some sort of hardware failure. A format and reinstall would be ideal at this point if you have your data backed up.

I tried the command and it didn't work
I tried to repair windows through install... it always freezes at some point
So I lost hope and backed up my data, formated and reinstalled windows.
Now Everything is fine.... Thanks for the help tlarkin

so when you booted off a winxp cd into recovery console and typed chkdsk /? it doesn't work?

I have never seen that before that is weird. Either way glad its working now

It worked... lol
I typed chkdsk /r
it was working for like 20 mins
and then finished
But it didn't fix my problem !
