Help, no signal on tv

I connected pc to tv with hdmi to dvi cord. From my video card. The boot screen appears, then it says unsupported video format. Anybody have any ideas of what i am doing wrong. I paid 8 dollard for the cord online, could i have gotten the wrong cord, could my video card not be good enough, do i have to have media center automatically start?
 
It is 1680 x 1050. I am not sure what the tv resolution is, but wouldnt i at least get some image, just poor. Its black . I dont understand because the boot screen appears
