I have windows vista. I am not getting any sound out of my speakers/headfones, I tried using onboard sound and an aftermarket Creative Soundblaster card... nothing... please help!!!

Thanks in advance!

Maybe a silly question, did you install the drivers for either of those?

also, when you tried using the onboard audio chipset did you enable it in the bios?

What model SoundBlaster card is it?....does device manager show any yellow exclamation marks?

I'm not saying your dumb or anything but do you have the speaker input plugged into the green jack on the back of the soundcard? Do you have the right output selected in windows sounds, as far as what card you are using at the time? When you hover over the speaker icon in the taskbar, what does it say? It usually lists what the output is, such as headphones/speaker or some other output.

It says Realtek Digital Output. Its an External device. USB. Headphones are hooked up to the one labeled "phones"
Just noticed when I mute the volume in the windows taskbar i can hear the faintest sound in my headphones like its turning on and off without any sounds if you understand what im trying to say...

I have a fairly in-deph knowlege of computer hardware and software... don't know why I can't figure this out. Ive built a few computers and learn as much as I can... this has me stumped tho.

Sounds like you are using the wrong output. Digital output is usually a special port on the souncard.

I'd take care of that Yellow Question mark first and go from there.

You said the sound card is an external device, USB.

Listed as Yellow Question mark, something USB.

Im in XP right now, but go into control panel and find the sounds icon and make sure the output is selected for whatever sound device you are using. I had a problem with a customers laptop the other day just like yours. What I did was uninstall the sound drivers and reboot and let it reinstall again, it had sound again. Remove the creative card and just try getting the onboard sound to work first.

That whats not plugged in? Remove the external sound card and try to get the onboard sound to work.

Ok... onboard sound is working!!!!!!!! YESSSS!!!!! lol
Its probably the USB error that is disallowing the digital SC to function... I tried to fix it thru the Device Manager.. nothing...

There you go. If your external sound card is usb then that could be your driver problem because you said you had a usb device that had an issue.
