Help OCing...not sure if I'm stable or not

Ok I OC'd my E7200 to 3.7ghz by upping the core voltage to max and changing the FSB to 390. Everything seems fine. Windows runs fine and up until now I've been able to run 3dMark. But I just put in my graphics card today (8800GTS) and now 3dmark crashes. I've never gotten Prime95 to run. When I start it, within like 5 seconds it just throws up an error and stops. My temps NEVER break 90F.

Mobo: ASUS P5Q SE
RAM: 8gb CORSAIR XMS2
 
download a program called "prime 95" run it for 4 hours if you crash then your not stable if you don't then your stable

ok well I figured out that I just need to turn down the FSB a tad. It was just confusing since Windows ran fine but apparently Windows can boot and be ok but still be unstable.

However I've run into a new problem...I found out that 382 is the magic number however now for some reason the computer isn't recognizing the OC. The BIOS says 3.6ghz but DXDIAG says 2.5 and CPU-Z actually goes back and forth between 2.2 and 3.6 I don't really understand why though...

ok I just noticed the multiplier also keeps switching from 6 to 9.5 and back again...It's set to Auto so I'm going to try and change it to 9.5 permanently

ok I changed it to 9.5 (instead of auto) and DXDIAG now says 3.6 but CPU-Z still shows it switching back and forth between 6x and 9.5x

well I'm down to 377 and still not getting Prime to run :(

Classic. It's the Intel Speedstep, a powersaving feature that clocks the CPU down when it's not under load to conserve power. There's no harm in having it turned on, as soon as the extra juice is needed the processor will clock back up. However, you may want to turn it off for the duration of overclocking so you can be sure it's actually running stable at the maximum speed - after you're done with you OC just turn it back on. You need to disable EIST and C1E in BIOS (and enable both to get the features back on again).

As for Prime95 not running, can you run it when the CPU is running at stock speeds? If not, then the program is simply not working with you current configuration and has nothing to do with your OC.

And as for the unstability, you may need to turn up the FSB/northbridge voltage to make it run stable. Watch them temps, though.
 
Ok I'll try disabling what you said. And yeah Prime 95 runs at stock speeds. I think I figured out why all the sudden it wouldn't even run at 377. I bumped my voltage down (to conserve power and generate less heat) at some point...so of course it wasn't stable :P

but I'm working with it right now and it seems 380 is stable (it passed the first 2 tests of P95. As soon as I find the highest FSB that can pass the first couple of tests I'm going to let it run for 4+ hours.

Also which test should I be running in P95? I've just been doing the middle one, In place large FFTs

well 380 wasn't stable. 375 ran for 1 hour and 59 minutes but then threw up an error...but at this point I really don't care. That's stable enough for me.

well if you are just using prime95, it is a single-threaded app
you would want to use orthos, it is dual-threaded so u can test dual-core cpus
this would be a much better stability test.
 
well orthos only ran for 15min before giving an error but like I said P95 ran for 2 hours.

And I just played Portal for over an hour with every setting set to Max and had no problems at all....so if it ain't broke don't fix it! If I start running into problems I'll go back to trying to make orthos and prime run smoothly but if my games run fine than I really don't care about anything else!

It's hotter than hell in here and my cpu temp is at 94F and thats with my fans at less than medium speed.
 
lol if it got that hot I'm pretty sure it would melt or something horrible.

What is normal operating temp for an overclocked CPU? Like when should I get worried?
 
Anything for 60C is too high. Intel's usually run a lot cooler than AMD cpus. Also, if Intel CPU's get hot, they start to clock themselves down. AMD's keep on going.

The AMD dual cores are really hot compared to the c2d's. IE my 6000+ x2 is around 45-55 C. on the stock cooler.

The single-cores run fairly hot as well... I have a Sempron here that on conld days idles at high thirties/low forties. And that's only after manually lowering VCore from 1.4V to 1.1V (I'm running a prestige chip here, too bad this rig is a prebuilt - can't bloody OC at all. I'm sure this thing would go high...). Under load it reaches low sixties (and that, again, is when I'm running at a lowered voltage).
