Help on overclocking

Hi.

Can you recommend me how to overclock to meet a significant difference on speed (For ex., up to 3GHz) without shortning the CPU life too much?

I'm currently using E6400 and GA-965P-S3.

Also, should I get a fan for CPU, if so, which model should I get (From CompUSA)?

Thank you.

If you want a significant increase in speed then you'll probably need to install water cooling, you can alter the clock speed typically through the BIOS, or in older models, shifting jumpers on the mobo, just don't increase the speed too dramatically, the clock speed is an indication of what's safe for that system, when you go any higher than the default clock speed you generally void your warranty. Short answer to the other question is; you cannot increase the speed of the CPU without expecting a slightly shorter life.

Water cooling that is better than current air heatsinks will set you back a few hundred dollars. Water cooling is really only for those wanting to put lots of voltage through their components.

As you don't want to affect life expectancy, you want to leave voltage at stock. Simply increasing the clock doesn't affect life expectancy at all.

The heatsink wizle suggested is the best cheap heatsink.

Ehh no need for water cooling.... I have a E6400 2.13ghz (stock) i overclocked it to 3.2 ghz pretty easyerly. no voltage increase. temptures are rather the same. I'm seeing alot of performance increase with over a whole ghz of processing power. FSB of 400mhz so thats 1:1 ratio to my ddr2 800(pc 6400). but thats my CPU as you know all CPU's are different. My friend has a E6400 as well but he couldn't get his to 3.2ghz stable but 3.0ghz was fine without uping the voltage(which is the main thing that kills the life span, unless u have major heat problems) 375 fsb still at a 1:1 ratio with his ram. i built his computer so its ratherish same as mine.

I don't recremend u do much overclocking with the stock Heatsink and fan thou.

go for a aftermarket one that'll only cost u $40(USD) at most.

E6400 3.2ghz
fsb 400
ddr 2 800
no voltage uping
Idle temp - 28 degrees C to 32 degrees C
Load - Max 42 degrees C 100% usage on both core
HSF - thermaltake tower 112 with 2x 4000rpm fans on it.
