Hi guys noobie im afraid. right ive been building my first computer for a while now and finally managed to get everything brought. im using old () but fairly decent kit I think.

the line up is an asus a8n sli premium for the motherboard. with an amd 939 4400 cpu cooled by a scythe ninja heatsink (yeah I know overkill but hey), I have three sticks on 1gb samsung and kingston ram, (pc 3200 I think) the graphics is an nvidia geforce 8600 gt. two x 250gb samsung hdd's one partitioned at 25gb with an xp 32bit os oem. I also have two dvd rw one samsung and pioneer. The case is a gaming case i brought from ebay to get the setup up and running it had a 550w psu supplied. the case has around 4 -5 quiet 80mm fans and the psu has a 120 mm and 80mm fan running on it.

came to turn it on (this is after doing the tests to see if everything is running for a week) and i hear a pop and now nothing will turn on. the motherboard has the little green light showing but the system will not turn on.

any ideas?

Im hoping its just the psu and not the motherboard.

thanks in advance

becauxe it is the PSU that came with the case the 12v rail will probably be very low amps, dont look at the wattage, look at the amps.

Because it is low, chances are it has overheated, not because it is being overworked, a 550W (with decent ampage) should easily run the system, but because, as i say, the PSU is low ampage.

Take the PSU out of your system. Hold the wires still. Hold the unit close to your ear and shake.

If it has overheated and gone pop then you may hear a little rattle. that is the thermal fail safe in the supply that comes with all of em that has exploded and come away from the PSB and is now floating around inside.

Because you heard a pop then chances are it is your PSU, that would probably be your best guess.

does the computer even show any action when you try to turn it on? Like do you hear fans spin up, maybe the power light come on? If absolutely nothing happens when you try to turn it on then either suspect ya the power supply is dead or maybe you didnt hook the front panel power button to the motherboard properly.

hi thanks for the replies. im in the process of removing said psu, and yeah when the power button was pressed the lcd on the case lights for less than a second and a couple of the fans leds show for a flash too but thats all

dead pc guys ive changed the psu and checked all the connections still nothing. i brought the jeantech storm psu and when i flick the switch it shows a reading of 002 the little green light is on, on the mobo. then when i try to power up still nothing. whilst looking at the cpu fan on the scythe it flinches by a milimetre.

is it time to get a pc technician to look at it?
