Help-pci 1.0 board with pci 2.0 video card

Hi, all!:)
I've recently decided that I can not take it anymore with my on-board video card, so I want to buy myself a new one. But my board only supports PCI Express 1.0. It's a Gigabyte 945gzm-s2. First I thought that Evga Geforce 8600 gts is the best buy for me, but it's at the same price as 9600. The problem is that the 9600 is a pci 2.0, so my question is: is my board capable of dealing with a 9600. I know that even if it can (I doubt it though:rolleyes:) the speed won't be any different compared to a 8600, but when I buy a mother board with pci 2.0 port, I'll get a better performance (it won't be soon).

Thank you very much for your help!!!!!:)
*And I really want to buy a card from Evga, I know that a Gigabyte one is better for my current board, but in future I plan to buy an Evga board.

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

Most likely it will work, however not all PCI-E 2.0 video card will work in a PCI-E 1.0a slot.

If you have a motherboard that is less then a few years old, most likely it was built using PCI-E 1.1, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Hi, it's me again. I didn't want to start a new thread, so I will continue here.

Thanks for the fast answers!!! But now I have another question. Looking at the prices, I suddenly changed my mind and now geforce 8800gt sounds better to me (it's only a couple of bucks more). The thing is that I do not need to run programs on high resolution, actually only at 1024x768. My monitor is old, but I'm addicted to it, and I won't change it, unless it breaks for some reason (the crystal Optiquest quality;)). So I want a video card, which can give very fast performance on this resolution, and I don't care about the higher ones. So, is it 8800gt or 9600gt for me? And I really want full Antialiasing with good fps, and a card for a couple of years hard overusing:P.

Thanks guys!!!

Umm... if budget is a concern, go get a 9600 GT as they're around $50 cheaper than the 8800 GT.

But if the $50 difference is not a problem for your, get a 8800 GT. Their performance is really close to each other but the 8800 GT beats it by a bit.
