I have some Xeon LC5518, FCLGA1366 socket, CPUs that I would like to build a computer around for a friend of mine. I have limited experience building desktops so all this compatibility stuff has me at a loss. I know these CPUs are made for a server. I would like to know if I could put them into a desktop ATX MOBO. I'm looking at a Gigabyte Technology GA-EX58-UD3R at the moment. Can you guys tell me if I can use a server CPU and what do I need to look for to be sure of compatibility in a MOBO and RAM? I was thinking about getting him started with 4GB of RAM.

The goal would be for him to be able to play some games on this. probably nothing too advanced, he was excited to be able to play half-life again. Trying to do this as cheaply as possible (sounds bad being a gift lol). let me know if you guys need any more information from me.

help me, oh mighty techies!

Thanks for the reply. I still have to ask, is there any MOBO that I can put one of these server CPUs into? I will likely only be able to do this build if I can use the parts I already have, plus some parts that I can snipe off ebay. He wont let me spend any more money than that on a present for him.

You need a server board to put them in, and that would be more expensive than just buying a new computer. Most server boards run $400+ even today.
