Help please no video input

Hi
my computer has been running slow and making lots of noise for quite a while now. I followed some advice on the internet to take the cover off and hover the dust from inside. Whilst i was hovering i accidentaly knocked, what i believe to be the heatsink off. I reattached this and put the cover back on. When i booted it up again the monitor just said no video input. Also the computer sounds as though it is not fully booting up.

What have i done and is it mendable?

P.S. i am not a very computerish guy so can you not go into too much detail.

Thanks for your help in advance.

If you mean the CPU heatsink, with fan on top. Make sure the fan power connector is plugged in the motherboard.

yes reconnected that and it goes round when i boot it up. All the fans work it just doens't seem to have a video imput on the screen.

You'd need to reapply the Thermal Paste to the bottom of the Heatsink and the top of the CPU.

It may not like just being stuck back on.

Also, don't use a vacuum to clean your pc, use compressed air.

Like said if you ever take off the CPU heatsink (or knock it off:D) you should clean off and replace the compound. Try resetting the bios. Does this have onboard video or a stand alone Video card?

whats the bios and how do i go about resetting it. I think this has onboard video as i cant see a video card.

Thanks for all your help so far, i really appreciate it!

Probably need to reset the thermal paste, you would go about this by using 97% isopropyl alcohol and q-tips to remove the old, then ordering some thermal paste off newegg or such. In a pinch you can head to radioshack, as they sell arctic silver ceramique and arctic silver 5 but its gonna be $2-3 more than from newegg(albeit after shipping its prolly less... since newegg is nuts for shipping prices on small items. For as5 and a crossbow retention bracket for my cooler i paid nearly $12 in shipping on $13 worth of stuff)

what needs re glueing. when i knocked it off it came apart at the pins. i just put the two bits back togethor, was there glue in the pins?

If your sure all you knocked loose was the heatsink, double check your 4 pin CPU power connector. It didnt break anything to do with the retaining bracket for the heaksink, getting good contact? I just dont see how you could knock it off without breaking the bracket or the heatsink hitting the board and screwing up a transistor.

i caught the clip thing holding the heatsink down. the went off and dislodged the heatsink. I pushed this back down again and redid up the clip.

hoovering the computer wouldn't have damaged anything else would it?

thanks

Wait... your heatsink was attached to the cpu still when you put it on? If so then theres ur problem. What you need to do is take it back off, pull the cpu off the heatsink, raise the lever on the cpu socket, put the cpu back in, clean off and put new thermal paste on the cpu/heatsink and then put the heatsink back on.

ok. i disconnected the cpu from the heatsink then fixed that down. i borrowed some thermal paste from a friend (thank god he had some,(he builds computers)) and put the heatsink back on. Waited 10 mins then plugged back in. Now it startes to boot up then stops. All the fans stop and the green "on" light on the front of the case flashes.

what is happenig now.

I'm not sure we're talking about the cpu cooler.

Can you post a pic of the component that got knocked off?
Crude diagram? Anything so we know exactly what we're dealing with.

Check your fan power cable is plugged in, check also that your power connectors are securely in and all are connected.

So the bottom of your CPU cooler had pins on it? If that's the case you knocked the CPU out too and probably bent the pins, which would mean you've got a new paperweight.
