Well.. the power went out and computer shut down then rebooted, to neither my mouse or keyboard responding. then after fooling with that for a little bit i tried unplugging replugging then my monitor went to the no signal sign, then it flashed back to a technical support screen sorta thing with a error code then shutdown (not enough time to read anything).... so im assuming either something needs to be reset or my whole system is fried... im honestly hoping its the first because i put alot of time and money into this :(

EDIT: i decided to not even try to reboot and get advice from experts before messing anything else up.

Unplug it from the wall. Press and hold in the power button a few times. Plug it back up and see if it will boot. If that doesnt work, repeat but with it unplugged, reset the bios by the jumper on the board or take the battery out for a few minutes. Replace the battery. Plug it back up and see if it will boot.

Mmm i'm no expert, but what StrangleHold might work. I was just curious if it was a laptop or desktop (i assume desktop). If the mouse and keyboard are wired or wireless. What type of windows running.

I know weird questions, but with my personal experience one night i was sitting at home on the computer (which is plugged into a surge protector). It was storming outside, and what i assume would be a power surge. My computer shut off, tried to reboot (windows XP at the time) gave me an error code and shut down. Not being able to restart. First thing i did was do something like what StangleHold mentioned. After getting it started (here's the confusing part) could not start windows, would only go to the error code and try to reboot. I had to start in the BIOS menu first. Then exit the BIOS menu and then try to start windows again. Could only start windows in "safe mode". Once in safe mode, my mouse and keyboard (wireless) would not work. Had to wire myself in. After repairing files and drivers, i was fine.

Not saying any of this might be your problem, but just thought i would throw it out there as weird as it turned out, just in case it could help. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it's just a charge in your computer that will disipate when you do what StrangleHold says.

Do you have it plugged into the wall or a power strip? Getting a nice power strip with good protection will save you from headaches.

+1 to that. Good powerboards will have phone line protection, switches for individual sockets, and so on. Your local electronics store will have plenty of these and they shouldn't be too expensive.

windows 7, wired mouse and keyboard desktop. its fixed, thank goodness. thanks for the help

Some background. Some parts of your computer are always powered even when the computer is off. Keyboard and mouse might be. However, the keyboard and mouse also have a resettable fuse. That fuse only resets when power is completely removed. You may have reset that keyboard and mouse fuse only when the plug was disconnected from the wall.

Other similar protector solutions exist. For example, a power controller also has lockout protection that is reset only by disconnecting the power cord.

No power strip protector adjacent to the machine would have averted those problems. Even the telephone line protection hyped in advertising does not exist if reading manufacturer spec numbers for that power board. Sometimes that power board can even make computer damage easier.

To protect from those other anomalies (which you did not have this time) means a different and less expensive solution.

best thing to do isn't a power protection strip or whatever, smartest is a ups, or backup power, all computers in my house have their own supply that can run them and the monitors and speakers for approximately 10-20 mins in case of a power outage to give ample time to close things down and shut the computer off in an emergency, a decent one can be gotten for like 60 for a hube brick similar in style to a power strip, or a decent one with a small lcd monitor to tell you the battery, input power, and troubleshooting lights will be over a hundred(got 1 on this comp)
