Help Please (servers/routers and hubs etc)

Hey!

Right basically we have a problem with our internet. It will go fast the stop completely go fast then stop and then stay stable for an hour and then stop completely. I then go to the server room turn the server routers(switchs i think) and internet adsl hubs and also internet line coupler (takes 3 lines and makes it into one "fast" one)

The guy that installed all this stuff keeps blaming it on this that and the other as usually and I don't think he knows what hes doing or has lost track! I have alot of computer knowledge but not so much network knowledge so go easy lol.

I thought that basically the stuff is to old and is getting clogged up as it can't cope with the demand we need on it. So what I did was got an old netgear adsl to ethernet hub and plugged it in without going through all the hubs firewalls routers switches servers etc and sure enough my dads computer goes like the clappers!

So do you think it is just the amount of stuff that is in there is clogging up and can't cope any more and is then just dying?

Now how hard is a broadband coupler to setup? with a bit of reading could i set it up as im sick of trying to say download a song off itunes or a film from itunes and it drops after about an hour and everyones moaning at me (its my families company and internet is heck of alot faster lol)

I don't think we'd need the server either. Would i need a hardware firewall or would a software one be surfice?

Many thanks
Joe

What kind of connection speeds do you have on all 3 lines? Honestly with fiber and high-speed cable pushing 30Mbps+, I don't see how one fast line can't be enough.

how big is the conpany how many buildings/devices

what kind of work is done?

stop downloading until a solution is found

Hey!!

Well to answer first question I wish we could get speeds anywhere near 30mbs!

We are in the UK and lucky if we get about 8mbs. 2 lines run at 2.5mbs and one at 4mbs.

As for work done everything from our staff checking emails to us doing FTP of small files to some bigger files.

we have tonnes of buildings be ones that consist of computers then we'd have 3 buildings.

I stopped downloading ages ago lol as lets say I think i could've walked to apple with a USB stick got the songs and walked back lol

 pointless information that comes acroos as "we have loads of property and make loads of ££££ in our family company"

thats great well done:good:

use some to get a technician to sort your network:P

Theres 2 ways to deal with that reply the unpolite version that consists with F and Y and the poilte version that would say I didn't mean to come across that way at all im saying all those buildings consist of internet connections but the important ones are those 3.

As for paying money for a "technician" we have tried and they all hide the information from you and close it off from you! So I'm computer savy in things like Dreamweaver to stuff like Maya and also some basic server stuff I did for a LAN (was a small so I understand ABIT not alot lol)

Plus the technicians are generally useless and can do one thing but can't do another!

cheers
Joe

i would speak to your ISP and look to get a single account for the three buildings.

i would set up a router in each building and enable a static route between the 3 buildings.

depending on the size of the business.

i would set up a computer as a domain controller to manage user access

and depeding on the amount of users and departments may consider VLANs

there are alot of options available dependent on your current set-up.

if you have technicians working for you full time instruct them to come up with proposals to improve network stability.

and also get them to test the nework now to see where and when the faults occur.

if there not able to provide answers then you will need to replace them or get someone into shape them up
