Hello, hopefully someone on hear can point me in the right direction.

I have a 5year old laptop and desktop of similar age, both running on XP. But both are screwed, they run very slow and especially with the laptop it seems pretty clear it is infected, although scans pick nothing up.

I want to wipe them and start a fresh. For the laptop (VAIO) I have the instructions on how to do a recovery but the options to do this arent where they should be on my computer. This may be because a year or so ago I had the system wiped by a computer tech, so I think the original layout is now lost. I dont have the recovery disks. I see no option at all to do this on the VAIO, nor on the desktop, so can anyone tell me how to go about it please?

Also, am I right in thinking that if the computers arent running well, then restoring them to factory settings should sort things out? When the computer guy wiped the vaio he just put everything back on it that was there prior, so clearly any viruses etc just went back on. It is so screwed it doesnt even burn disks now.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED :) as I need to laptop in particular sorting asap as I play poker for a living and am going away soon so need to take it with me to use!

Thanks

well the only way to format your laptop without the recovery disk/s is to have yourself a legit copy of windows and reboot your laptop and boot from cd first. make sure you have your windows genuine key handy during the installation.

hope this helps

What have you used to scan your system? If you don't have recovery cd's then you'll have to order them from Sony, which could take up to 2 weeks to get. If you haven't used malwarebytes or superantispyware, I suggest you do so.

Please follow this procedure for running malwarebytes and hijackthis.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
