Hey guys, well I start my computer and it sais system fan failed...i'm sure everyones seen it before, then it shuts down. I have forgotten to plug in a cpu fan before...but ITS NOT UNPLUGGED. it's spinning, its lit up, the temperatures are not hot...but it wont let me past the first boot screen unles i go to BIOS. Tried plugging it into 3 different slots, even unplugged some stuff figuring maybe the PSU doesnt have enough juice. Please help.

Are you sure it's plugged into the correct header? Look at your manual to confirm what's what. If you're sure you've tried it, check the bios. There's usally something to disable this.

it has worked fine for 6 years now, and today I powered it on and it gave me that error. But last night I was installing lights into my tower. When I did check it out I saw that one of the skinny wires from the CPU fan was in the PSU...think maybe one of the wires touched something and shorted out?

Maybe the header has gone bad. How many pins are there, 3?

One of those pins is for feedback to the system, perhaps that is the one that's bad.

Have you tried putting a different fan into that header for the CPU fan? Then you will know if the problem is with the fan, or with the header on the board.

If using a different fan doesnt help, all I can suggest it to hope there's a setting in the BIOS that allows you to turn off this warning system.

thanks everyone. i took a ride to compusa and bought a new cpu heatsink and fan, works fine now. but set me back $30 :-(.
