Hi there.Sorry to bother you all.
I've recently bought a basic Dell laptop. I use it for very few needs - internet and typing up work. It only has "works" processor which, explained to me today, means when I attempt to process my work on uni computers - to print etc - does not allow it.
What i'm asking in a terrible way is can i download a basic microsoft word programme, i.e word 2003, on the internet anywhere for free? does anyone kindly have any suggestions as to what i should do? i hear "the ultimate steal" is good - thing for students which means you can get microsoft odice 07 for a year for 14 pounds..however anyone have any free suggestions for a student!?
much obliged

Thanks for your help. Downloaded OpenOffice - so if I transfer my document from Works to the Open Office Writer will this then be "compatible" on Microsfot Word on the university computers,i.e. can I then access open office work on microsoft word?
hope this makes sense?!
Thanks very much

yeah as long as you save the files as whatever they need to be. like .doc or whatever it is

I havent used OpenOffice in a while but I think you just go to save as and then there is a drop down for what file type.

And if you want OO to always save word processing files in .doc format do the following:

1) Open Open Office Writer (the word processor)
2) Tools -> Options
3) From the left-hand column choose Load/Save -> General
4) Under Document Type choose Text Document
5) Under Always Save As choose Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP

Click OK to get out of there. Now your default extension when you save word processing files will be .doc

NOTE: While you are in that dialog, you can also specify to save Spreadsheets as .xls (Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP) and Presentations as .ppt (Powerpoint 97/2000/XP)

Superb. Thankyou. Brilliant advice.
One last thing!
How would I go about converting a current piece of work I have saved as a Works Processor document on here TO an Open Office Writer document - as above.. Would a simple copy and paste do the trick?!
Thanks again

Looks like the best way is to open your Works files in MS Works and save them as .rtf files, then open them in OO. You may need to check all your formatting and such.

Papoose... did you mean "Unix" from '...uni computers...'?

A lot of (modern) Unix/Linux computers have OpenOffice, AbiWord or some other kind of word processor or office suite preinstalled as system software. It is compatible with Microsoft's versions IF you save the file as ".doc" or ".rtf" for better compatibility.
I have been doing this for about three+ years.

A workaround: join the Linux world!
