help really weird problem .exe not running

I've look around and haven't found any solutions to this strange problem . I suspect it's a problem in my registry , but even if I could to get it to run, I donno what I'm looking for. When I boot, windows doesn't recognize any .exe files and it opens that program we all love , the one were it ask you to pick a program from a list, lol.

Strangely, Firefox is the only program that's running because it's the "Default Browser". If I were to guess, i'd say windows knows how to open the program without the .exe file because it saved the commands because it's the default browser or something crazy like that. :/

Anyway, if your knowledge or research finds anything, please let me know! I had just reformatted my machine a few weeks ago, I don't want to do it again so prematurely!

EDIT: I could probably try to fix in safe mode, but I wouldn't know how. Mabe a scanner that can detect the .exe problem in the registry? Unless someone know what I should check in regedit?

ok, never mind I fixed it . For the record, although going safe mode didn't make the .exe work, but by chance windows asks me if I want to use system restore, and it works.

I remember now Ad-watch reporting having many registry modifications yesterday, I do beleive that was cause when I installed iTunes incorrectly. After the system restore, the modifacations were reversed, and the iTunes install processed was restarted and it installed correctly this time.

Man that was a close one . Big thanks to anyone who considered to try to help.
