Help Request: Files Gone Missing from Hard Drive

I have a 120 GB Fantom external drive which has about 100 GB of data which I am having problems with.

I had two main folders on this drive which contained about 50 GB of data each. Suddenly, while I was using it one day, one of the main folders' subdirectories completely "blinked out". In other words, where there had been hundreds of folders containing thousands of files to be browsed, now there was only one file left and no folders whatsoever. Nothing was sent to the "Recycle Bin"; it simply disappeared from the directory somehow.

Also to be noted here is that when I check the properties of the drive, total space occupied lists as 100 GB, so it seems to be recognizing the missing files in some way, just not displaying them. A scan revealed no bad sectors and the drive seems to be functioning completely normally otherwise.

Is there a tool or set of tools I can use to repair the drive and access the files again?

Solved

Problem solved: two commercial data recovery programs were used to recover almost all of the data. However, I still don't have a technical answer as to what caused this.

And johnb35, Checkdisk said the 50 GB of files were recoverable, but this was after I had already used other programs. However, it did say there were problems it couldn't fix.
