Help - strange - what's wrong with my monitor? (youtube video included)

My monitor started acting up about a week ago. If flickered weird but when you pressed the start key or opened a program, it worked fine. But as soon as you went to the desktop it was impossible to see anything because of all the flickering and messed up picture.

This weekend it got worse and now there is no way to get it to work.
Here is a video of it - so you can see what I mean.
Note: the last two seconds of the video, it turns a bit purple. That's just the recording - not the monitor.

Also, here is a still-picture of it. Click to enlarge.
The desktop background is supposed to be the night-skyline of downtown San Diego, with the ocean at the bottom and the sky at the top.

Any thoughts as to what's going on?

Have you tried replacing your video card with a known good one? Or tried the monitor on a different computer?

Yes, the monitor has that problem on both computers at home. My other monitor works fine on both computers.
So, I assume it is a monitor problem and not a video card issue.
The problem occurs even during booting (when the BIOS screen shows up - so even before windows starts).

Why didn't you say that then.

I actually bought the new monitor after writing my first post. It was one of those - "okay, we have to go buy one NOW" situations for my wife to be able to work. So, I went out that evening to a computer store and bought one. Over the weekend, the old had gotten worse, and I knew I would likely have to buy one this week - I just didn't think I'd end up having to run out right away to get one.

Then, the thought came to mind - "hey, why not still try to somehow fix the old one and maybe I can use it as a second monitor".

So, now you know the whole story. :)
I wonder if it is worth it to even try to fix it (on my own). If I knew what part died, I could see if it is worth it.

I'd crack it open and see what was inside! Why not...what else are you going to do with it?

You never know..might find a easy fix or something.

A friend gave me a laptop once that he said was totaly dead. The little lights for the hard drive and stufrf would light up and sound like it was running but no picture. I opened it up and found the monitor had come unplugged. It was about a 5 minute fix. I gave it back to him:D

That's what I was thinking about doing. I just thought I'd get some thoughts from people here as to what I should look for.

I also had a friend who gave me her laptop because it was totally dead. She considered it trash. I opened it up and turns out the CMOS battery was dead. I put a new one in and all was fixed! I also gave it back! :D

well i think there is some short of problem in one of the IC's of your monitor, take it to the workshop and get it replaced, once i had same problem and it was the IC which was the root of the cause , ic was for 3$ ... worth spending
