UPDATE: Please see my posts at the bottom, thanks

Hi -

I just joined the forum - long story short, I have been offered a job working from home.

The requirements are that I not use a router, have virus software etc etc etc

Well I also just looked and it says my IP needs to begin with "192"

Googled it and I guess that means I have to be on a private network?

When I searched for my IP, it said it begins with 50.

I took my laptop off the router and plugged it directly into the modem

Still says 50 for the first numbers, not 192.

What do I have to do to get my IP address to begin with 192????

I used suddenlink for my internet...... do I need to switch??

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!!!!!!! :)

192 is the IP address for your local network, meaning all the devices hooked up to your router over WiFi have an address such as 192.168.0.5. The 50 one is your public IP address, meaning your home network appears to the internet with the 50.x.x.x. address.

What job is this? Not having a router or anti virus software seems a bit weird of a requirement...

How are you supposed to have a private 192.168 address without a router?

By virtue of having a 192 address you would be behind a router. I'd see if there's a helpdesk that you can call that can walk you through the specifics.

A lot of places will ship their own router and give you an isolated inside segment that VPNs back into their network.

THANKYOU so much for your responses! THANK-YOU!!! You deserve a gold star. And thanks in advance for any help now, you are a true blessing to me:

Here is the link to the computer specifications:

I guess I misunderstood about the router part, also the virus software is something I do need to have, sorry I wrote it wrong.

But if anyone knows how to make sure my IP address will begin with 192 PLEASE PLEASE let me know, thanks!!!!

Also here it is if the link doesn't work:

Systems

Mandatory: All network devices must be hardwired and the router must support VPN pass-through. IP address must begin with 192. Must use a built-in Ethernet card

Okay, I may be an idiot here, but I reread it, and I'm wondering if the specifications mean that my router's IP address must be that? If that's the case then how do I find out what the IP address of my router is????????

Sorry I just really really need this work at home job to work. If you respond, you are an angel! THANKS!!

@beers is the network engineer, not me but I'll see if I can help.

Looks like they're just wanting you to hardwire into the router rather than using WiFi. If you're plugged into a router then you will have a 192 address. They should specify which IP address they're talking about as only local networks start with 192. Fire up command prompt and type in "ipconfig" and press enter. Post back with what it says.

Any retail router can be manually configured for any internal IP. Usually all retail routers will start with 192.168.x.x

Some ISP gateways may start with 10.0.x.x
