Please tell me if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt really figure out where it should be

ok so i reformatted everything on my computer. then when I tried to reinstall everything, my OS disk wouldnt finish so i decided to see if the other OS disk from my laptop would work. it worked, but my computer is very VERY slow. I'm sure something isnt downloaded but I have absolutely no clue what it would be. i've never had any troubles like this before. my computer has been resently upgraded, and, except for the processor and motherboard is all very nice. so it should run pretty snappy for everything except the larger programs and the newest games may have some lag also but nothing like this. it takes forever to just start my computer and usually takes 3-4 attempts and then once in windows it takes about 5 minutes before its done loading everything and then it will even freeze on simple things like the start menu. i have no clue if you could just guess or maybe a hijack this log would help? tell me what to do to fix this or what to do to get you the info to fix this problem.

Thanks

The thing that will help you the most here is the type of drive you were trying to install Windows on with the other installation disk. The general system information can help too. One question other then whether you are running an ide or sata drive is what OS or simply put which version of Windows are you seeing this with? With a sata drive the installer may stuck briefly trying to get the driver working after copy from disk. You may have simply seen an incomplete install of Windows or some drivers only partially installed.

mm yea....^^ didnt pick up on all that but i did here the questoin what OS am i trying this with and it is windows xp. i need simply put directions. basically i have a gateway and used the gateway cd but it didnt work so i used the os from a compaq.

How about the drivers for the mother board? You will want to see those installed for memory, ide, sata, and other onboard controllers as well as the chipset drivers. Are those weren't put on. When installing XP Pro on the sata drive added lately it initially took longer for a fresh install there to load then from the two ide drives(one now running Vista, the primary seeing XP Home).

Once I put on the updated version instead of the board's cd version(older) the system loads normally. What model Gateway is that? I can locate the support site if you need help there. With a fresh install of Windows alone you shouldn't see that long a lag however unless something didn't install fully? One other question is how long have you had the system?

model number mfatxpnt esx 500S

i do not have warrenty any more for the computer because it is ummmm 5 or 6 years old now though i have upgraded many things in it and it was fast before i formated it until i got a virus i didnt feel like messing with so i formated it and now its slow. could it just be that i dont have the right service pack or whatever thats called? when windows xp starts up, the loading bar is blue. i know the color changes with different service packs but i mean, my computer is really slow right now....its froze twice for about 10 seconds at a time since ive started typing this and this is the only program running

The blue color seen on the scroll bar when booting up is seen after SP2 is installed onto a system without having it or included on the installation disk. If you install with the first release or the SP1 release that would be dark green in color just like the current Vista's scroll bar is also seen. That tells you Microsoft will have some service packs coming out some time later.

When installing XP Pro on a sata drive here everything slowed down for a period of time until all drivers and planned softwares were installed. With the old system there you lack the drivers for the board mainly. Those include the drivers for memory controllers, the main chipset, and any other onboard items. You are probably long overdue for a bios update as well.

Your problem unless you had clear warning of a virus originally could be a few things like the battery on the board itself going on you or even the memory installed. I presume the memory there is either PC100 or PC133 if correct. Battery, bios eprom, memory, driver problem or simply the lack of are all things that could explain this. Unfortunately a search on that model number didn't come up with useful information like specifications or updates.
