Help with choosing a CPU

Hey guys, the gfx in my card ****ed up so I need to buy a new one to be able to use my computer again (im on my dads pc now).

I've decided that I'm gonna also upgrade my cpu and ram because they are t3h sux0rz.

My current cpu is an athlon 64 3500+ 2.2ghz single core (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103533)
my current ram is kingston 2x 512 mb
my current gfx card is a nvidia palit gefore 7600 GT

Anyways I've been looking for cpus on newegg and found these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103272

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103210

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103255

All of these fit my price range (nothing more than 100 dollars)

I'm looking for a CPU that is good for gaming and games like WoW and cs:s (max settings)

If you guys know a CPU other than those that i posted that you really reccomend and isnt over 100 dollars (if it is then slightly over 100 can be ok)

I also know zero about overclocking so maybe you guys can give me some tips on that. I might just ask the people where I got my computer built (some small computer and electronics shop) to help me overclock it.

But this means I'd probably need better cooling so I don't know what I have to get if I need better cooling. I heard there's something called a heatsink, dunno what that is.

If you guys know any ram (1x1 gb) or gfx cards that you reccomend please post here.

thanks a lot.

All those cpus are a different socket than your motherboard.

You either need to find a 939 socket cpu or buy new am2 board,,,but i would then recommend not going with AMD.

The switch to Intel would make sense. However, for cheap..look for a socket 939 cpu...

I'm not an AMD guy but I'm pretty sure the AM2's have 940 pin cpu's..

You can buy a new motherboard--I would suggest if you do to switch to Intel.

You cannot use an Intel cpu on your current AMD motherboard.

S939 are not as easy to find...I did see a 3800+ for 19.95 but I'm sure it's not worth it for an upgrade.

I wanna stick with amd tho <3

Okay, then..

look for an AM2 socket motherboard, and look at the higher end x2's for cpu's. 6000+ x2 might be suitable for you..

You can get a S939 cpu for your current board but I just can't see it being a worthwhile upgrade.

Also, as far as overclocking goes...AMD's aren't the greatest OC'ers

Alright a few more questions coming your way.

When I look for a motherboard what do I have to look for? Just the am2 socket? Is there anything that makes motherboards better than others?

Secondly I posted 2 +6000 amd processors one was a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103272

and other one was http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103233

I read the thread made a while ago asking which of those cpu's is better but I'd like some reasoning to see which one is better.

And by the way even if AMD's dont overclock good maybe, they can still overclock. Would I need some extra cooling for that?

I guess the one with 2x 1mb cache is better but kinda a small difference I'd say overall.

Don't get me wrong, you can OC with AMD, just not like Intel chips, and yes, cooling is always good idea if you o'c'

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103272

Mobo: Depends on your budget
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128090

ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131339

RAM: So cheap now, 2GB or 4GB, up to you.

GPU: It all depends on your budget, My list will be 4670 < 9800GT < 4850 < 4870

By the way, make sure your PSU is powerful enough before you purchase video card.

How much are you willing to spend for a board/CPU and memory?

daisy you posted me some stuff with worse customer rewiews than the stuff I had planned to get

stranglehold, for motherboard I don't know because I don't know what kind to get,CPU 100 dollars max, memory 50-60 dollars, probably some DDR2 ram cuz I heard ddr 3 isnt a big diff and it costs a lot more

Daisy gave some good recommendations, and now you're acting like you know more based on some random criteria? I'm guessing you looked at the percentages of 5s, etc...and made some sort of definitive judgment on that loose basis.

What were you planning on getting anyway? Maybe people can then compare those products to things they prefer.
