Help with computers please

So I have two computers, ones a desktop from around 2003 with 512 MB of ram. The other is a laptop that overheats every time I try to run more than two programs, like windows media player and a web browser. My problem is I'm trying to run a 3d animation program called Maya, and it simply doesn't work on the desktop, first cause it doesn't have nearly enough ram, and also little odd things like certain handles aren't appearing where they should and odd things just enough to make it impossible to work a good looking project. Maya however runs great on the laptop, except of course, the laptop shuts down after about twenty minutes of use. I am assuming this is coming from overheating. My question is this: What can do to one or both of these computers to make them high performance enough for Maya. and obviously I'm hoping for a relatively cheap solution otherwise I'd just go buy a mac pro.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas!!

As I look at the requirements for Maya, you need 2 gigs of ram (minimum). For your desktop thats 6 years old, you already know that will not work. On top of that you need a pretty good graphics card to go along with it assuming that your desktop has some kind of integrated graphics card. Your CPU has to be a Pentium 4 or higher speed, so that intel celeron CPU will not make anything better. With that said, what kind of computer do you have (both desktop and laptop)? Also list the specs of your computers if you can. My solution would be just to build your own computer and make it fast enough to run Maya. A macbook pro would be a good solution but i feel you can get much better with cheaper thus thats why i say build your own computer. If you never built a computer before, welcome to the computer forum. If you are willing learn how to build a computer to run Maya, we can show you the way.

Wow, That's certainly an idea. Where as I am completely open to the idea, Right now really doesn't seam like the time for me to learn that. I'm seventeen, so I have plenty of time to learn in a few years perhaps, but I am just now getting interested in learning programming, (and I still have MUCH to learn in Maya) so I already have plenty to learn and focus on and get headaches over.

Lets see, the desktop is a hp pavillion a255c? and it also says Pentium 4 (not sure if that helps or not) and the laptop is a Compaq Presario and I THINK they both have 512 MB of RAM. Sorry i'm not real good at finding that sort of stuff heh.

But it's starting to look like the best solution (aside from learning to build my own computer) would probably be just to buy a new computer?

(By the way I appreciate the help)

You will get a lot better system if you build it yourself. You will definately need a better system to run your program though. If you don't have the experience or any friends that can help you build one, then your only other choice would be to buy a prebuilt computer. Just buy one with good specs and has some upgradeability.

Okay, that sounds like something I can do (after saving up for a while) heh Thanks for the advice, like I said though, after things have smoothed out for me i'd be really interested in learning to build a computer though.

How much would you be willing (or parents would give you if possible) to spend if you wanted to build a computer? Just trying to get some ideas.
