help with cpu/MoBo!!

hey!

my pc broke n mobo said "system failed:cpu test" (cpu overheated due to a faulty fan). now i got a new cpu but mobo still says "system failed:cpu test". do you think that the MoBo itself could be broken?
 
Are you still trying to run the CPU @ 3.81GHz? Anothor option is a bent pin in the LGA775 socket
 
No, its a completley new processor.... got a waranty replacment from intel. but now its making the same error again, failed cpu. i think it could be my MoBo but didnt see any bent pins so could it be fried? hope not, dont want to wait another week for asus to send me a new one.
 
I read that one guy was getting this error because the ATX12 wasn't plugged in. Other people have reported success with a more powerful PSU.

I don't know if any of these will work, but the ATX12 at least is worth a look, also if you haven't already clear the CMOS.
 
already cleared cmos and just made sure that power cable was pluged in properly. i doubt its a PSU fault, worked perfectly with idenctical processor and is 500W. just checked the mobo,,,, it seems to have a few of those cylindar cappacititors or whatever they are that come out of the mobo (like 1cm high) have funny power at the top of them and look kind of burn..... i dunno if they are not supposed to be like that.

Funny power? Those are resistors, and if you have broken/fried resistors then something's definitely not going to work. That would cause a dead-end for current, and would definitely stop the POST from recognizing a device. Are they right next to the processor? and if so, do they look fried, or different than any other resistors on the board?
 
yes they are beside the cpu and they do look different, kinda burnt and not shiney and swolen at the top. but i sent away the cpu thinking that that was broken- would intel hav egiven me a new cpu even if the one i sent them worked? also, this means i need to send the mobo to asus,,, anyone know how?, becasue i went on their sigh and its got no e mail or any phone numbers (for UK). if anyone can help plz write back!, desperate to get this fixed!

ps, i had a CPU from malaya and they send one back from costa rica.... is there any difference?
 
Make sure that you're not mistaking the little rectangular things that are stuck on the board (they're resistors too!) with the cylindrical ones that actually come off the board and have wires going from both ends. The rectangular ones are generally black to begin with.
 
na, its the resistors that actually come off the board, the ones that u can kinda move about (not that i did lol) but their tops look kinda like this (only round) [><] but on the kinda burnt ones they are poped out a bit, like sonething inside expanded.

Well, if these is white POWDER (you mean powder, right?) , capacitors (yes, think they are not resistors, mobos usually dont have 1 cm high resistors...) are sure to be broken or workingon a limited capacity. The heat and/or too high/negative voltage has caused capacitors to burst.
 
well, if it a capacitor that has burnt out your mobo may be salvageable a broken capacitor should not have the effect of damaging other components (unlike a popped resistor) . If you are bloody great at soldering then you can remove the old capacitor buy one of the same farads and tolerance and solder it back on. Might be worth testing all the resistors on that track to see if any have burnt out, i say might be worth because it wouldn't be arsed if i were you I'd just try the replace the one component and if that didn't work bin it, or sell on ebay as damaged, some people love fixing this stuff.

Hmm....my metric's off again..damn you U.S. with your inconsistent measurements, and your...rock music and your...your..uhh....fish!
 
thanks for your help, im sending it back to the company i bought it from and hopefully will get a free replacement!
