Help with friend's desktop

When my friend's computer turns on, it will go into a black screen that allows him to select start windows normally, safe mode and networking, safe mode, safe mode with comand prompt, or start with last known configuration (I assume this is his BIOS?). When he selects to start windows normally it begins to load normally and then the monitor says that there is no signal, but the tower is still on. However, the keyboard and mouse stop working. Does anyone know what might be causing this? He has windows XP (he's not sure whether it is 64bit or 32bit).

That's what I am thinking, but he doesn't know any of the specs of his computer (It is really old). Is there anyway to test it? If its the cpu he needs a new comp, but if its the GPU, he could get a new one right? And if its onboard graphics then he is screwed again. Haha.

I have read some comments on youtube and some people who have problems similar to this one opened up their cases and dusted off the gpu and then it worked. Does this seem like a plausible solution for this scenario?

How can he download that program if he cannot log on to his computer?

Edit: What would explain his keyboard not working?

Does the Computer shuts off and then restarts or it just stays on.

And check what motherboard he has.And is it an onboard GPU or Dedicated.

Even I think it is the GPU.
But before concluding try a different GPU and also try running the old GPU in some one else's computer

I thought it was the GPU as well, but his uncle fixed it. He didn't tell me what it was; he said that he will explain what he had to do to fix it tomorrow when I see him.

Thanks for all of the help!
