hey everyone, i'm new here. anyways just wondering wat exactly do i need for my home network, got 6 computers connected to an 8 port switch, and the broadband modem is connected to one of the computers. I am pissed off with having to turn that sh!t on when i want to use the net and have other people turn it off on me when i am downloading.

I want each computer to be able to access the modem directly. Some people say that i can plug it into mu switch other say i need a router and others saying something bout a proxy server?? anyways i have a thompson speedtouch 360 ADSL modem... could some one tell me wat i need to buy or offer some advice on setting it up if i dont need to buy i anything.

Thanks
Jason

Yeah, the modem should be connected to a router to share the internet connection and then the other computers should connect to the router. Since you've already got a switch, there may be a way to connect the modem to that switch and split it. Does it have an uplink on it?

most isps only allow one ip address to connect at a time. but a router has its own ip. so you can connect as many computers to a router as you want. a switch doesnt have an ip thought, so you need a router

Get the modem connected to the phone line and power plug, then have one cable going to the first computer via USB (if you can) directly from the modem, have another cable going to the switch from tghe modem, it should obviously be a LAN cable, then from there, have all the other computers connected directly to the switch via LAN cables. each of them seperately.

all PC's connected to hub or switch

one PC gets 2 ethernet cards---one goes to the modem, one connects it to the hub or switch, and that PC acts like a router with packet forwarding and MASQ running--------this is the simplest and easiest way, one caveat is the PC connected to the modem cant be shut down or all others lose net access

no it does not have an designated uplink port. Only ports 1-8.

If i buy a router, what sort/type do i need and how would i connect it in?

modem--->router---->switch/hub------>(ALL PCS)

or

modem--->PC(with second NIC)----->hub/switch----->rest of PC's

either way will work
