trying to boot windows xp pro from disc, and i keep getting "fatal error" and it quits and restarts. i keep getting this everytime. please help

Before assuming a hardware problem examine the installation disk for scratches and smudge marks from handling. If this is the first time the disk has been used you may received a bad copy. You can also try booting with an older installation disk to see if the same problem comes up. Then you have to start looking at other things like a bad drive or board problem like ram.

i have booted from this disc before. i'll try cleaning it right now. i got another pirated copy but i'm in the middle of setup with this one and it won't let me go farther

If that one is also a pirated copy that could explain a number of things. The screen shot you posted was blotted out for the most part by glare off of the monitor itself.

the one i'm trying to install is an original copy. i took out the disc and was about to snap it in half cause i was getting so frustrated and threw it back in and the problem went away and is starting to setup windows. i'm keeping my fingers crossed it is going to work

ok i got it installed but i cannot get online. i'm not using a router and this computer is on the same modem. it says connected but it's not. if i unplug the modem it still says connected

Sounds like your drivers were not installed correctly. Check the device manager for any yellow ?'s and if there are none go to the network devices and ensure the one it installed was yours and not the wrong one windows tends to do this occasionally and if it was the wrong one and you have another computer on the net and a jump drive simply download the correct drivers from another website and resinstall them

in device manager, under network adapters, it has 1394 net adapter, and then ethernet controller with a yellow ! next to it

would switching from xp home to xp pro cause it? where can i download the driver? looked on hp's website for my pc and didn't find any sort of internet diver

you need to find what kind of ethernet card you have there are many programs that can tell you for sure what is in there or if its integrated into your motherboard you can check with the mobo manufacturer on what kind it is
