Help with laptop heat?

Running SpeedFan, my laptops temps are:
HD0: 40C
Temp1: 49C
Temp2: 42C
Core: 47C

Right now, my Core temp is at a stable temperature, but sometimes when I am watching YouTube videos or just listening to iTunes, it can jump up to as high as 65-70C.

I am using a laptop fan that I bought from Fry's Elecytronics and it doesn't seem to help.

Also, I don't think my mobo is supported by SpeedFan, so I can't change the fan speeds.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Can you see though the vent holes to get a look at the heatsink fins and fan? Is the laptop years old and never had a cleaning?

If thats the case, open it up and get the gunk out.

Assuming what's in the specs is your current laptop, I'd say that's your problem. Gateways tend to get warm, AMDs tend to get warm. You could try some stuff like optimizing startup and all, but I'd say it's probably just how that laptop is.

Laptops are usually designed to be alright with higher temperatures; they need to be conservative on the cooling to save battery and due to the small size of the fans, keeping the temps insanely slow would wear them out and make some horrific noise. Not to mention flash can be a CPU hog at times... I wouldn't worry too much until the temps constantly climb to somewhere around 80.

Below 50 degrees with fairly "normal" ambient temps (~21C) should be absolutely fine for idling and your average yahooing around.

I only say that those temps are high based on my own usage. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and Dell laptops are pretty well known for heat problems. I average about 45C and temps only spike at about 55C with a very heavy load (video creation usually requiring near full system resources utilization).

If it were me I would call the manufacturer because I would believe 65 to 70 to be too high with only something like iTunes running. They could at least tell you if they consider it Ok or not. Couldn't hurt to err on the side of safety, eh?

It may be that you have foist-ware from the manufacturer, I know I had quite a bit of Dell pre-installed garbage. If you want to, post a HiJackThis log so we can see what all is starting up and running. Its up to you.
