Help with Mac

A friend of mine recently used a macbook with OS X to create some kind of backup on her external drive. Now neither mine nor her regular computer recognizes the drive. The macbook I think recognizes it as the backup program and not really a drive. I say I think because I don't know what a drive is suppose to look like on a mac. It shows up as the name of the program she used although I can't remember the name now.

How can I clear that off the drive? Everything on there can be erased, we just need to get it back to the way it was.

Does it show up with a software icon or a disk drive icon (white squarish lookin thing)?

If it's just showing up as a hard drive, you should be able to format it to fat32 so that other machines can read it.
