Help with Microsoft Money 2005

I have a friend whose computer crashed lat week. Luckily, he had backed up his data just a day or two before, because the only way to get him running again was to format drive C: and reinstall Windows XP Professional SP3.

He uses Microsoft Money 2005. He had backed up the data files to a thumb drive. We reinstalled Money, and I thought it would be easy to restore the backup file, but I can't figure out how to do it.

I go to file, then restore, and it gives me a dialog box enabling me to browse to the backup file. I select the file, and then it asks where to restore it. This is the problem. There obviously is no current data file, so I created a new file and named it with the "mny" extension. When I click OK, it asks the password of the backup file, which I enter, but then it gives me an error message that it cannot access the new data file because

"the file is either read only, the drive is locked/protected, or you do not have privileges to access this file."

This is not verbatim, and I can't give more details now because it is my friend's computer not mine, and I am not there now. He is the only user so obviously listed as administrator which would enable me to change any settings I have to, but so far I can't figure out what settings I need to change. BTW, if I go to the new data file's properties, it is not listed as read only.

I have tried numerous ways to get around this, but no matter what I do, this is the final result, and it will not let me restore the backup file.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I will be going to his house again tomorrow to try to fix this.

TIA

Could try going to control panel / System and Security / change user account control settings. (temporally try never notify). See if that does anything.
