Help with my brother's PC

He has told me that something changed the display fonts, he is unable to remove certain things, and when ad removing a screen pops up saying this websites security doesn't match, and his computer runs slow and shuts off... I had him run the usual programs.. spybot, ad aware. and avast.. etc.. avast he says came up with over a thousand things and he could only remove one item at a time.. i told him not to bother trying to do that.. i think he tried to anyway... anyone have an idea what specific virus this may be... or what may be used to get rid of it.. here is the hjt log...

I can tell you right now your problem is Avast is a system hog. I recently got rid of avast b/c I realized that's what was slowing my system down. I recommend a nice small yet powerful one such as AVG or Nod32.

As for your hijackthis log, I will leave that to someone else this time as I am busy at the moment. Also, a combofix log wouldnt be a bad idea either.
 
Ill have him run a combofix log as well...

as far as the avast being a resource hog.. i was wondering about that.. i have heard conflicting opinions on that.. but my computer does seem to be slower then it should... especially when loading a video.. such as a yahoo news video being very choppy...

anyone else have a opinion on that..

but first things first, guess i better help him clear up this problem first..

As g25racer said, do a combo fix log

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

You didnt get rid of avast yet. That should be the first step.

Edit: It looks like combofix took care of it. The byte size after combofix indicates that.
 
What's wrong with Avast!?
If you're getting rid of it, please download or buy another antivirus as soon as possible.

I don't think you're fully clean, but we can check that easily.

Download Avenger, and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it. (Do not run it yet).

Note: This program is for use on Windows XP 32 bit systems only, and must be run from an Administrator account.

  • Open a Notepad file by clicking Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the box, click OK.
  • Click Format, and ensure Word Wrap is unchecked.
  • Copy and Paste the text in the box below into Notepad.
  • Now save the file as RemoveFiles.txt in a location where you can find it.

Start Avenger by double clicking on Avenger.exe.
  • Check Load script from file:
  • Click on the folder symbol below and to the right, and browse to RemoveFiles.txt.
  • Double click it to enter it into Avenger.
  • Click the green traffic light symbol.
  • You will be asked if you want to execute the script, answer Yes.
  • At this point you may get prompts from your protection systems, allow them please.
  • Avenger will set itself up to run the next time you re-boot, and will prompt you to re-start immediately.
  • Answer Yes, and allow your computer to re-boot.
  • Upon re-boot a command window will briefly appear on screen (this is normal).
  • A Notepad text file will be created C:\avenger.txt.
  • Copy and Paste it into your next post please.
 
the note says only for windows xp but he's running windows 2000... is there another program that would work...

i'm considering the AVG.. but heard things about that as well... ill have to try it on my system first... so g25 you think that the avast is slowing his system down... but there had to be something on there to do all of those other things.. he doesnt have the sytem that i have so its got to be slower... ill check that out...

so still possibly infected though?
