Help with new build (homework, multimedia, gaming)

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on a new build. I recently sold both my old dells (xp1645 laptop and an old inspiron desktop) in order to buy a new xps 15. However, work is providing me with a laptop now so I am going to build a desktop.

budget would be up to $1000 when finished, I have an OS already and a small hard drive to start. No need for monitor either.

Software being used: visio, oracle, visual studio, photoshop, (need video editing software), along with Diablo 3, starcraft 2.

I was thinking about starting with this......
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($314.99 @ Newegg)

CPU & GPU: I am not sure if it would be better to go for cheaper i5 3570k and getting 7870 instead.

Mobo: personally go to gigabyte instead

SSD: samsung 840 out of stock...

I keep going back and forth about the CPU. Some of the software I use will take advantage of Hyperthreading. Which is why I am leaning towards the I7 over the I5. I can only imagine more software using HT in the year(s).

It would be best to try and buy from one place if you can. It would also be best to buy everything at once rather than buy it in parts here and there.

For video editing I'd recommend you probably stick with the 3770K but get a 16GB kit of RAM, 2x8GB of 1600MHz or 1866MHz would be great. If you find you're running out of money though, maybe forget about the 3770K and go for a 3570K. Even for video editing it should be fine and you can overclock it. On my i5 2500K @ 4.3GHz video editing is fine, as is photo editing and Photoshop work.

I'd probably get myself a GTX 660 or a 660 Ti if I were in your shoes, those cards will be fine for your gaming and editing needs. CUDA will help with your editing, so you probably want to stick with NVIDIA this time round.

I wouldn't get that Rosewill power supply, I'd get a Corsair CX 600 or a TX 650 V2 instead. Both are great power supplies and for a 660 or 660 Ti provide more than enough wattage.

I wouldn't go for an mATX board unless you want a small PC. I'd go for an ATX. Gigabyte make some good ones: Z77-D3H, Z77X-D3H, Z77X-UD3H. All good. ASUS also make some good ones, the P8Z77-V series are the boards you want to be looking at if you want ASUS. Either make is perfectly fine.

Case looks decent but I'd think about maybe think about getting a Phantom 410 instead or a Fractal Design Define R3 or R4 or something. The BlackHawk looks all right though - just throwing some other options out there for you to look at.

I probably wouldn't ever bother getting a sound card down the line unless you want to do a lot of audio editing and have good speakers to match, and SSD wise 256GB is a great size but I'd probably choose the OCZ Vertex 4 over the Samsung 830.

It's in my shopping cart waiting right now. Doesn't mention if its a special or not. I might have to buy it now just to make sure I get the price.

As for buying everything from one place at the same time. I am for sure buying from microcenter (I couldn't get pcpartpicker) to go to microcenter only.

Im going to go with the 3770k especially since the price I can get it for at microcenter.

Graphics card is my hardest decision to make, so many out there!

corsair cx 600 sounds good to me.

If i go with nvidia I will have to switch mobo's. I might setup a build with nvidia and a build with AMD and get opinions.

Yeah get the 3770K if you can get it cheaply.

I would get the Z77-D3H, NOT the Z77M-D3H. Stay away from mATX for this kind of build. I'd personally get a Z77X-D3H or UD3H. Whatever you get, make sure it's ATX. You don't really want to be using mATX for a build like this.

I think graphics card wise a GTX 660 would suit you well - it'll be great for both editing and gaming.

Case wise, yeah, the one you found looks pretty good, but take a looka t the others too.

No you won't. They all run in PCI Express slots. No need to change your board.
 
I think I have it figured out, everything listed on here I can get from Microcenter. One question, the MOBO says integrated graphics depending on the CPU. Would there be integrated graphics with this?

Yes, you would get integrated graphics with the 3770K (Intel HD 4000 graphics I believe) but remember once you install that 660 Ti into your system, the integrated graphics will be disabled.

You need the graphics card for gaming and it helps with rendering too.

I am pretty confident I will stick with this build. I am still doing a lot of research and looking at benchmarks for the GPU. It's overwhelming to be honest.

I have the funds now to get everything but the GPU. So I am thinking of going to the store tonight and give myself a couple weeks to decide on the GPU. Maybe I will spend a little more on the GPU. I just wanted to make sure it would run without it.
 
Yep should run fine without it for the time being. I think either the 660 or the 660 Ti will be fine for your needs, but you could get a 670 if you want.

Would this build work as a hackintosh? My buddy does video editing and likes final cut pro and is interested in the build
