help with new build

Hi guy's,
Could someone put a parts list together for me? I have trouble understanding what is compatible and what is not. I want to build a desktop, no gaming just banging around on the net, download music, mess around on e bay and forums. I can't spend a fortune on it but want it to be a good one.
Currency is US.

Thanks
Mike
P.S. I made this same request in Jan. 2006 and am still running that computer. It has had some memory added and went thru two power supplies and one hard drive but it has been a great computer.

How about going for an i3/not a K series i5 and a weaker motherboard to save $200? If you don't do gaming there is no point in getting an unlocked quad core... A motherboard with 3 pci express x16 slots that support SLI and CF if definitely not a budget motherboard :D. The ssd is also not necessary unless you simply cannot stand your PC taking 30s to boot up.

He is not gaming but did say he wants a good system, most people would say nowadays any good system needs an ssd.

The k series i5 will let him overclock later if he chooses too and get some free extra power.

I still disagree, if he's not even getting a dedicated video card, and is not going to do gaming, then what would be the point of overclocking? Also there is no point in getting that beast motherboard.

I doubt this dude needs a 240 buck processor and a 160 buck motherboard or a SSD. Pretty much way overkill. A nice little AMD APU system would work for well.

It is hardly a beast, it is one of the cheaper z87 motherboards.

The guy wants a good system just because he is not going to be gaming doesn`t mean he should buy some crappy h87 motherboard

I always think it is better to build with the future in mind if you have the budget, usually as people progress there needs get higher, then if you have build a system based on your original basic needs you have the hassle of selling a whole system and building a new one.

I assume when he is spending $700 on a brand new pc, he wants it to last many years before having the hassle again that is long time for his power requirements to grow.

He never said that he wants to build a $700 pc, he said that he would like the price to be lower than that if possible. The choice belongs to him anyway. What you gave him is pretty much a high end gaming pc w/o a dedicated video card.

Not really springwater, if it was high end i would have included an i7 not i5 and certainly more than 4gb ram and a better psu.

I feel the build i gave him was at his budget and is an average build, but of a spec that as his needs grow he will have a machine capable anything asks of it.

$700 which is about £450 in my country is not a lot for good desktop.

My first pc was a medion that cost £400 and had no where near the spec of that system and is was not long after getting it, i progressed to needing a higher spec and because i didn`t buy a bit above my needs at the time, I lost quite a bit of money having to sell a pc that was only months old.

Its still overkill for a internet machine, and that use-case aint going to ever require that much power period. Still a nice build you've suggested, but the OP needs to know he doesn't require anything close to that power for his needs or budget.

Sorry, I got busy and have not had time to get back in here.
I like the ideal of upgrading! this is a parts list from when I first built this computer in 06. The ram listed is incorrect so pay that no attention. The power supply was replaced with the same specks and the hard drive was also replaced with the same one listed here. It has 1.5 gigabytes of ram and windows xp. So Okedokey "or anyone else" the question is can it be upgraded? and what would you suggest? Thanks for all of the input.

Your links are all broken. For example your first broken link:
Should it be?

These two links display the same in a post but the actual link for each is different. Note the quotes were only added so that the actual links could be shown.

Is this the list you intended to show?

i3 ivy intel processor and 1155 motherboard plus Corsair 430W PSU and Windows 7, 4GB DDR3 (cheapest you can find) and you're done.

i3 Ivy Bridge CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775 - $130

Gigabyte motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128619 - $40

4GB Corsair RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233132 - $30

430W Corsair PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 - $20

Total $220. Massive improvement. Keep your other components. Add $100 if you need Windows 7.

that build is far more appropriate to this purpose, id suggest a SSD in addition to those parts...night and day responsiveness there. maybe a 1Tb hdd for storage unless moving the old drive over.
