help with processor selection

Hi all, I was just wondering if a AMD athlon XP 2600+ processor would be a good upgrade for me. I have an asus A7N8X-E deluxe mobo with 768mb PC3200 DDR and currently a AMD athlon XP 1700+ cpu. I also have a Nvidia Geforce 6600GT video card and XP home. I know i'm a little behind the times but i'm just looking for a cost-effective upgrade, oh and I can get the 2600+ CPU for just under $30 or would I be better off getting 1GB of ram for the same price?
which would be better for gaming performance? thanks in advance!
 
I hate telling anybody to upgrade a old socket A computer like that, but if you can go from a 1700 to a 2600 for 30 bucks. Not to bad. Your still stuck with less than a 1GB of memory though. Then another 20/30 bucks. Dont know if its worth it or not, your call or save your money up and update the whole thing.
 
thanks for your reply, and I know what you mean it's definitely not a high performance rig but I guess what I was wondering is if going to a 2600 processor is going to be a noticeable upgrade? I just want to be able to play games like NFS most wanted a little better.
