Help with purchasing a gaming computer

I recently decided to go against my ways of purchasing a Macbook Pro, considering I want to get a computer that will be more gaming intuitive. The main thing I am going to be playing is Battlefield 3 (when it is released). I also am on a slight budget, and am looking to spend anywhere from $800-$1200.

Desktop or Laptop?
I currently have a Dell XPS M1210, and it's time for an upgrade. I am torn whether to get a desktop computer or a laptop for gaming. I won't be moving around that often, but I'd like the convenience of being able to bring my computer anywhere I go.

What Brand?
Like I said, I have a Dell, and I don't really want to make the mistake of getting an overpriced machine once again.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks :D

Desktops are much better than laptops for gaming because of cooling issues. And are you able to build it yourself? It's not that complicated and anyone can do it.

I would be able to build it myself, but it would be something that I have never done before and I don't want to screw it up x.x

It's fairly simple, and we can always help with anything. Just make sure you have quality parts, which we can do for you.

don't forget there is a sticky thread in this section i believe for building + it has picks threw the whole process.

You still have to buy the case, keyboard, mouse, monitor, things like that. And you could always improve on this, also. But it should destroy battlefield 3. You may also want to wait for the new CPUs coming out that are suppose to be really good. Well, I hope, anyways.

I'd probably be buying it within a month or two, so hopefully I don't buy it and the new CPUs come out.

Does it have to be a specific case? Or will anything work with this setup?

you can build one a good bit more powrfull, but cuber and ibuy tend to have the best prices, not sure on quality thow.
