Help with RAM

Hey, I'm new to the forums, just needed some advice.

I've got my dad's PC that he's had sice 04. I've wiped everything and it's as new, it wasn't used daily, in fact it's sat there quiet for two years with no use! It's a HP Pavilion 453.uk and it's got 256 RAM, 40GB HD etc.
My question is, what's the highest RAM I can fit into it, and what's the name so I can search for an exact one for it

Any help appreciated, thanks

Okay thanks guys, I do a lot of ebaying, do you think if I find a couple of good ones and post the links here you could tell me if they are okay?
Thanks once again :D

Of course...that's what we do and why we are here;)

First link...it will work but only is 1GB total:(

Second link...it will work but only is 1GB total:(

Third link...That's what you want, Kingston and it's 2GB total:D

I know but 1gb is fine for me. Is it good value for money?

Also, what would be faster when done?
My 2GB vista laptop or the 2GB tower PC (if I ever get this sorted:P)

Thanks for the help

Although I do not think your motherboard supports dual channel memory...2GB will be better.

Think of it like this...

Hard drive = Encyclopedia set
RAM = Your Brain

When your computer needs to get information it has quick access to stored information in your RAM (or your brain) If the information is not in the RAM (your brain) it looks in the hard drive (encyclopedia set).

If you have a bigger amount of Random Access Memory (brain) your computer can think faster:D

That depends on many more things really, hard to tell right now:o

Okay cool no worries but what do you mean by the first statement (motherboard and dual channel :eek:) I know I'm a noob, sorry !

Dual channel means that BOTH memory sticks can access the memory controller. That means they can run separate from each other. These separate channels allow each memory module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth.

In single channel...the sticks have to access the memory controller together.

Oh, okay, thanks for the help today, it is much appreciated.
I'll look on eBay again later and try and get some funds in place
All the best!
