Does anyone know of any good websites that thoroughly explain how to manually edit the registry to improve PC performance THE RIGHT WAY?

FYI: The PC is a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP Home edition 2002 with service pack 3; Pentium 4; 3 Ghz; 2.5 gigs of RAM

Thank You

The right way to edit the registry with RegEdit to speed up your computer? Don't.

There are some websites out there and a few good books that explain in great detail how the registry works. But, there are much better utilities for doing what you want to do instead of mucking about in the registry yourself.

What kind of performance are you looking to improve: boot time, program loading, too much memory use from un-needed services? Or are you just asking in general?

A simple defrag can help for starters. You may also want to grab CCleaner and run its file and registry cleanup functions. For a better defrag utility than the built in Windows version, I would recommend Defraggler.

You cant really improve the performance manually editing the registry. But you can clean out invalid registry entries with something such as ccleaner or tuneup utilities.

The above comments are true about the Registry, but:

You can greatly increase performance and reduce start up times by using
the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) I only disable the one's located
under "Command" listed in "Program Files" that are unrelated to Antivirus Software mainly. When in doubt, don't disable it until you've researched it.

or the Services dialog in the Administrative Tools section.

All of the above replies should be very helpful to you. Overall, the registry editor (regedit) is not generally used to speed up performance.

One way that helps boot up go faster, Like "bodaggit" said, msconfig.

Start>Run>msconfig.
(Make sure your under *Selective Startup*
From msconfig go to the startup, If you see anything you don't use anymore, or old things, or things you don't want in your startup, disable it from the startup (Or just remove it from your computer)

But regedit can be used to remove invalid registry's, or anything harmful in your registry.
Ether manually, or with something such as ccleaner as "bomberboysk" had stated.
