Help With Thermal Grease

hey, just had my amd 64 x2 4400+ delivered and put it on my mobo. In the manual it says i must use a thermal compound inbetween the core and heatsink. I have some arctic silver 5. do i have to remove the silver material from the bottom of the heatsink and apply the arctic silver 5 and where does it go on my cpu? i cant see the core like in the diagram on this page;

oh and yes you need to remove the old thermal crap on the heatsink. Both surfaces need to be v clean. Try to clean them with acetone (nail polich remover) and a cotton bud (cue tip)

nail polish remover and a cotton bud, sounds good. are there any other alternatives to nail polish remover and do i have to clean it with anything else after the nail polish remover?

(If you use acetone, do a final cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.)"

It only the fancy ones that have got smelly crap in them, get some cheap stuff and it will be fine

deck the heatsink while you're at it. Just get some 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 grit wet sand paper and a sanding block. Polish the surface to a mirror shine. In theory if you get it smooth enough, thermal paste isn't needed (but still use it)

You apply thermal paste to the cpu, not the heatsink

Its never gonna be that smooth .... short of using scientific equipment to machine it down and its also a lot of work for a stock cooler (and "in theory" you would also have to lapp down the cpu's heatspreader heh)
