Help with upgrade

Hey guys, new to this forums and have done a fair amount of looking around and there is a lot of information here!

I have a few questions that pertain specifically to me and i figured i would ask them and see if anyone can help.

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, my motherboard is am2+ socket,(A780GM-a v1) and I want to put a am3 phenom quad core in it. I was looking into a phenom x4 965, read its a decent processor and i think will do the trick.

I would upgrade everything, but i already have 8 gigs of ram and a nice video card that works well, CPU is the only thing I need upgraded.

I cant find specifically if this board will support AM3 CPU's. I looked at flashing the bios and that looks easy to do, and i looked at the updated drivers for my board.

one of the update notes was ( Now supports AMD 6 core CPU's).. if an update made the mobo support a 6 core cpu, then it must support the am3 socket right? they didnt make a 6 core am2+ did they?

One other question, if am3 does fit, does that mean that am3+ will fit? because i have seen a few AM3+ cpu's i like...for example the FX 4100....cheap and looks decent.

thanks a lot guys!!!!!

am3+ won't fit and isn't worth it if it did, it was a complete flop really. i would get the phenom ii 960t, it is a 95w quad and with the bios update it can unlock to a 6 core too. otherwise it should overclock like hell.

Zambezi is not a complete flop. Its just slightly slower clock for clock then the Phenom and overclocks alot better. Dont let these complete noobs fool you into believeing that.

Ive looked around and im pretty happy with neweggs prices, and ive had good luck with them.

That is what has been mentioned, It looks like a good cpu to me, its AM3, but im guessing if you suggested it you think it will fit.

will i need a bios update for this to function? or just if i want to unlock the other 2 cores?

thanks!!!

I currently have a athlon x2 6000+, its a 125watt duel core i belive, so I can go either 95, or 125 watts if im not mistaken?

yes you can use it from a list i found on google

and zambezi is good, just compared to a 960t which is older and performs better i would say that is a flop, and even if you can overclock the 4100 to equal the 960t, can't you overclock the 960t to be even better than it again.

What list? a link would be great, just curious.

also, will i need to do a bios update with my old cpu, before i install the new one? for it to work?

or can i install the new cpu, everything will boot okay, and from there i can decide if i want to update my bios or not?

thanks again for all the help!

i do think im going with the 960t

Alright thanks, I dont think there is much of a difference between v 1 and 1.1.

I think ill risk it. thanks!

You have no idea what your talking about, plus there is no guarantee that the 960T will unlock to a X6. Have you owned either or overclocked either? I have got the single FX-4100 that I owned to 4.7ghz. with air. A good 960 hits around 3.7/3.8 ghz.

Plus I have no idea where you got this board supports Phenom II X4 and X6. It does, but only 95W models.

This board supports CPU up to 95W TDP only.http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pr...goryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=20&LanID=0

I would upgrade the motherboard. ECS are pretty cheap lowend boards. This one only has a 2+1 power phase and you will burn it up if you push it to much.

alright, got the cpu in the mail, installed it and my computer wouldnt boot, so now im back on my old cpu and installing the new bois.

still pretty sure my motherboard supports this cpu.... its 95 watt, and its am3....i see multiple places my mobo support these....so im guessing it must be bios version

any ideas?

all i can say is if the bios doesnt solve it...save a little...and buy a better motherboard, and some super cheap DDR3 ram...worth buying now honestly. as was said earlier, it might not have enough backbone to support the chip even if the manufacturer says it can. i had some luck dropping a 955 into a biostar board however down the road the motherboard fried that chip, i do not recommend running that chip in that configuration.
