Help with upgrading Network.

Hello, currently I have this setup.

*IGNORE " . "*
ReadyNAS, Laptop and Switch have a gigabit connecrion.

Wireless Cable Modem > (LAN) ReadyNAS, Laptop, Server
.........................................> (WiFi) 10 devices.

The connection between the ReadyNAS and the Laptop is only 8mb/s. (too slow) If I upgraded it to this, would it be a lot faster?

CONFIG-1
Wireless Cable Modem > (LAN) Gigabit Switch > (LAN) ReadyNAS, Laptop.
....................:...................\> (WiFi) 10 Devices.

Or if that didn't work, would this?

CONFIG-2
Wireless Cable Modem (wifi off) > (LAN) Gigabit Switch > (LAN) ReadyNAS, Laptop.
......................................................\> (LAN) Access Point (fast ethernet)> (WiFi) 15 Devices

So in summary, could you please reply with:
Would any of these make the connection between Laptop/ReadyNAS faster?
If any of them don't work, what would? (keep in mind I need 10 - 15 wireless devices connected by wifi and a fast connection between ReadyNAS and Laptop both with gigabit)

Sorry for any confusion and help is well appreciated.

I'm assuming the cable modem is an 100mbit device. The 8MB/s would be explained by that.

Config 1 will probably do the trick. Although you would have to check if the readynas isn't also a bottleneck. You can test this by directly hooking your laptop to the nas (probably need to set static ip's if you do this).

Config 2 will do nothing for the speed between the laptop and the nas. It might make the connection between the wireless devices and the nas faster if you an accesspoint with a faster wireless connection then the cable modem.

Thanks heaps! Sorry I should have posted that yes (pretty sure) that the modem/router is 10/100 mbit. The ReadtNAS has got Gigabit connection. Also why I suggested Config-2 is that every few hours the wireless drops out and we have to reset the modem. So I thought that the actual wireless "chip" in the modem/router was going down because when the wireless goes down, the LAN stays connected. So I thought that if I got a dedicated access point that it could handle more connections.

So there is no speed difference between ReadyNAS and laptop using Config-1 and Config-2? With Config-2 would the wireless devices not drop out as much? Is this a good Access Point? http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=12337

Ahh that explains why you want a separate accesspoint. Yes, that should be able to fix it provided you get a decent one.

Your link doesn't work but you can check out lots of router reviews and charts at smallnetbuilder.com
