Help with viruses/trojans/adware/spyware

Yeah that's right, all of those nasties are plaguing my father's computer.

Ok, I am somewhat knowlegable to computers, and I am requesting help. Here is what's up:

My father has an addiction to the pornography websites scattered throughout the web. However he knows nothing of the consequences that precede viewing about 30 different *free* sites in 1 hour. I'm hoping I can get some feedback and help on the problem. This is what I have done so far to his computer.

Adaware: tried it, yay
Spybot: tried it, yay
Start > Run > msconfig > disable all, yay
Tried this stupid system recovery thing that supposidly takes everything back to day 1, but the computer people made it, really gay.

and after none of this seemed to help the situation I did something that will haunt me for the rest of my life (besides checking this history on his browser). I happened to bring up the consol and type in "netstat -n" This nifty little command tells you all the connections to your machine. I was disturbed... 2 FULL screens of connections. Now the thing that puzzled me was that it appeared as if my father had 2 different IP addys. one looked like a router, and the other was his real IP. My father is running 56k and has no firewalls. About half of all those connections were established, and 1/4 were waiting, the rest were doing their own thing, whatever...

(Please note that no programs were running when I pinged all connections, only Netzero and Internet Explorer, and a few processes that I just can't seem to end)

So my basic plea is as follows:
Do I need to partition all drives and reformat, or is there a way to nuke all these incoming things to my father's machine.

First thing you need to do is get a rules-based firewall like ZoneAlarm. This will alert you to all incoming and outgoing traffic and ask to make a rule for it. If you're not sure what it is, check it out first before allowing\denying. Lots of programs are connected to the net, many just "listen" for updates, etc. Before installing ZoneAlarm, download Ewido. Update it, then run a full scan in safemode. Boot back to normal mode and install ZoneAlarm. Then download Hijackthis, install and select "Do a system scan and save logfile". Copy the log and post it here.

HJT Log

Just running the HJT program, here's the log:

argh, his computer is so bugged out, it won't allow me to download anything...

So I downloaded the programs, put them on a disk, we'll see what happens. I hope they can update from his computer.

Not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. There's no Anti-Virus showing, download AVG and install it. Update it and run a full scan in safemode. Reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

no, that was just my computer, I haven't gotten to do it on the severly gimped computer yet. I should be able to post that one in a day or two.

To install AVG, it requires a Liscense / Sales Number

If I were you I'd just reformat. Yeah it's very possible to get rid of all of the junk your dad has on there. But what would the sense be in spending hours upon hours trying to repair it. Just back up important files and reformat. I recommend this mostly b/c it eliminates the problem of something not being detected and still spying on you. But on the other hand it's worth a shot. If you can't fix it w/in 3 hours. Reformat. It's that simple. Good Luck!

And what if they don't have a copy of Windows? Or don't know how to back-up? And where did you get the idea that something might not be detected and carry on spying? Can you give an example?

What I meant by all of that was that some spyware (not all) does not come out very easy for the average computer user. As far as the windows thing goes, yeah some people wouldn't have access to a windows cd, so that does create a problem. But i'm sure if one is somewhat knowlegable at computers that they could get a disc off of someone. But yeah I do know what you mean by that.

Basically the only way to get this situation under control is to first know what problems we're dealing with and fix them.

But as far as reformating goes, I just prefer to do it b/c it would save me the trouble if i was in that person's shoes.

I wasn't trying to be difficult. I just wanted to spread my ideas.

Well, I do need a copy of windows, I *had* one, but when I tried to reformat a friend's computer with it, it well uh... I guess the CD was scratched, one of the files was corrupt, his windows didn't start, he wasn't very happy... yeah, that was a fun day.

In response to blocking his *tendencies*. I'll just install that firewall and make sure its set to the highest possible security settings, then claim ignorance when he can't view any of the pictures.

archpho3nix,
Please run the AVG scan and post a log, as Buzz instructed.

alienmidget,
Initial input to a security post is ok, but when a moderator is in the middle of a fix, please allow them to follow through uninterupted. The moderators of this security forum here are actually trained for infectious removals.

Thanks,
Byteman

alright, ran AVG in safe mode, came up with nothing (I guess that is cool) Here is an updated log:

You've got Spybot's Tea-Timer feature running. You'll need to disable it while you do the fix (remember to turn it back on after). Alternatively, do the fix in safemode (tap F8 on startup until a menu appears, select safemode).

Go to Add\Remove programs and remove PartyPoker (unless you play it)

Run Hijackthis and check these lines.

Close all windows apart from Hijackthis and hit "Fix Checked".

Find and delete this folder (if there)
c:\program files\partypoker

Find and delete this file (you might need to see hidden files and protected operating system files)
c:\windows\evgxslin.exe

Then reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

yeah, gotta feed the poker addiction, party poker is here to stay >.<, but I'll get rid of the rest of the stuff. THank you, will have the nasty post up hopefully tomorrow night sometime.

Ok, finally ran HJT on my father's computer. I couldn't access this website from his computer, it kept giving some phoney error, so I had to save the log to a disk. Anyway here it is after running Spybot and Ewido in safe mode. I think I ran AVG also.

You're running Norton Antivirus as well as AVG. This can cause a conflict, so choose which to keep and uninstall the other. You need to download some programs.
CCleaner.
CWShredder.
Aboutbuster.
SpSeHJfix.
Unzip them to the desktop. Open Aboutbuster and update it. Don't run it yet.

Then boot into safemode.
Run CCleaner.
Then run CWShredder.
Then run Aboutbuster, run it at least twice.

Run Hijackthis and check these lines.

Close all open windows except Hijackthis and hit "Fix Checked".

Find and delete these folders\files (you might need to see hidden files and protected operating system files).

C:\WINDOWS\iau.exe
C:\Program Files\PornoTop
c:\eied
c:\ex.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Search for and delete these files. Be very careful with the lssas.exe, it must be spelt exactly.

stisvsq.exe
svshost.exe
msqdevl.exe
lssas.exe
mservice.exe

Then run SpSeHjfix. Click "Start Disinfection" and wait for the computer to restart.

After reboot, run Hijackthis and post a new log, and say how things are running.
