Help with Win 7, not valid

I purchased a used desktop on Craigslist that had Win 7 Ultimate installed and have been using it for about 8 months. Yesterday I got the "This copy is not genuine Windows" pop up and the message stays in the bottom right corner of the screen. It wants me to validate which I haven't done that yet.

Evidently I have a pirated version of Win 7 Ultimate so now I want to know where to go from here and what is my best option. Do I need to buy a new full version to do a new install? I don't think an upgrade version will work? Should I buy from Ebay, Craigslist or a Retail store? I don't want to get another Non-Validated version but also don't want to buy 3 new retail copies of Win 7 for my 3 computers.

I also have 2 more computers, 1 with XP and 1 with Vista that I would like to upgrade to Win 7 so I need to know if there is one version I can buy to do all this? I heard that XP will not upgrade to 7 and I would have to first upgrade to Vista then 7.

Any advise will be appreciated.

There are a number of reasons why validation can fail. If your copy of Windows fails validation, you will be presented with a list of tools and information. You can use this list to learn more about why your copy of Windows failed validation and to see possible solutions, including instructions on how to use the Validation Advisor, request a complimentary Windows Genuine Advantage kit, and if it is a pirated version you can also talk to microsoft but they will need all the information you can supply and they may give you a genuine new code as you bought it in good faith

be very cautious when buying on line. My copy of windows 7 pro would not validate. I contacted the seller, electsurf, and was told I had not paid for the purchase. I went to paypal, copied the receipt and mailed it to them. the purchase was fully paid on jan. 1. it's been 3 months now and I still can't validate. In addition, my windows vista quit working. MS claims it's already in use but that's impossible, it's validated before with no trouble. My advice is buy locally. If you have a problem you can take it back and talk to a real live person. If all else fails you can take them to small claims court. That option is not available if you live in california and the vendor is in New York.

I appreciate your replies. I called the number given to call @ Microsoft about the non-valid issue and the only option given was $199 for a Win 7 Ultimate product key. She sounded like she was in India and wouldn't budge on the price. I explained that I used the computer for 6 months with no issues and believed it was a legitimate version until the last couple of days but no offer for a better price was given. I would like to find someone in Microsoft Support that would sell me a Product Key for around $100 that I could just enter into my program.

But I really don't need Ultimate and Win 7 Home would be just fine but of course I can't use an upgrade program because I already have Ultimate.

Thanks for the warning on the online software, that was my suspicion with all those on Ebay although many say sealed and the seller has a good reputation. I think my best option is to buy a Windows 7 Home full version locally.

update. My note above accomplished what months of letters and emails could not. Electrosurf finally emailed me new key numbers. I have not tried them yet because 3 months was too long to wait. I bought another copy locally.
