Hi guys. I've got a problem with my compaq nx 6110 rumming (or rather not running) on Win Xp home (2002). Since Friday all I get on start-up is the DOS message that windows hasn't started successfuly and do I want to start in 'safe mode', 'last known working configuration' or 'normally'. No matter which option I choose, it will allways reboot up to the very same message. what can I do short of formatting the drive and re-installing?? Any help appreciated. Thanx a stack.

Most likely you have errors on the hard drive and would need to run the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run the extended test. What brand of hard drive is it? Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor, Hitachi?

I have moved this thread into operating systems.

Sorry guys. Was out of action for a while. Got myself a nice trojan (system tool) on my one working machine whilst lookin for help with the notebook.

johnb35- thanx a stack, will try to do (if I can get it)

Rit- I don't know, was in operating systems when I posted (or at least I thought I was.

Thanx again

Could be a corrupted windows file...

You can try using the recovery console, available on the Windows XP disk, or even doing a system restore...which you could accomplish with a boot disk like ERD commander or a similar variant...(I'm having trouble remembering XP recovery procedures...been a while.)
