I am recieving a couple of 486es to fix up and give away...
Well, I don't know what operating system is on these 486es...
I'm guessing either Windows 3.x variety or Windows 95 maybe 98: worst case scenario: MS-DOS.
Should I keep the OS that comes with the 486 boxes or should I install Xubuntu <or any lightweight Linux/a windowing environment>?
I have installed Windows XP on a 486 before out of curiosity and it was funny watching the computer struggle (30 minutes to load, stopping halfway and rebooting), so I don't know.
These computers will be used for word processing. I have set a minimum to do everything else (listen to music, burn CDs, go on the internet, use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program; Linux version of Photoshop) at about a Pentium III 500 mHz with 256 MB RAM.
