Ok well as of right now the modem and router is in my parents room and they are moving it down stairs. so i have an office down stairs and they do to. I want to take the modem downstairs and get a gigabit switch but the problem is can i take advantage of the full gigabit speed

i am not exactly sure what you are asking but here goes:
you will get the gigabit speed only in your lan. As soon as any info leaves your LAN through that modem it is running at your ISP given speed. (the speed that you signed up for)
Also your computer and your parents computer NIC's will have to be able to run at gigabit speed.
otherwise for example if your parents computer can run at gigabit speed but yours can't. Only the section that is hooked up to your computer will be running at the lower speed.

hope this helped.

where are you trying to get the full gigabit speed. like i said before as soon as the data gets on the cable that is going to the modem it will be back down to 100 MB since it says that the modem supports 10/100 MB speeds

i no that
i only wanted to see if i can use the gigabit speeds with that modem when it is wired
so i can use that modem with a gigabit switch

there no real point in doing it its a waste of £ unless you transfer loads of massive files every day?

what are you trying to acheive by going gigabit?
